perplexed but not in despair. John xvi. 33. These things I have spoken unte you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye fhall have tribulation: but be of good chear, I have overcome the world. Heb. iv. 3. For we which have believed, do enter into rest.

1 Zech. xiv. 6, 7. And it fhall come to pafs in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark. verily I fay unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that fent me, hath everlafting life, and fhall not come into condemnation; but is paffed from death unto life. Chap. vi. 40. And this is the will of him that fent me, that every one which feeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life. Ver. 50, 51. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he fhall live for ever: and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

6 Ifaiah xliii. 25. I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy tranfgreffions for mine own fake, and will not remember thy fius. Jer. xxxi. 4. I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their fin no more. Heb. viii. 12. I will be merciful to their unrighteoufnels, and their fins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

7 Ezra ix. 13, 14 And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trefpafs, feeing that thou our God hatt punished us less than our iniquities deferve, and halt given us fuch deliverance as this; should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? Wouldit not thou be angry with us till thou hadit confumed us, fo that there fhould be no remnant nor efcaping? Pfalm xxxviii. 1. Sucks ill from good, and good from ill: 5

Humil'ty makes my pride to grow,

And pride aspiring lays me low. 6

1 Rom. iv. 18. Who (viz. Abraham) against hope believed in hope. 2 Cor. i. 8, 9. For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Afia, that we were preffed out of measure, above strength, in fo much that we defpaired even of life: but we had the fentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead.

2 Phil. ii. 2. Wherefore, by beloved, as ye have always obeyed not as in my prefence only, but now much more in my abfence; work out your own falvation with fear and trembling. Luke i. 74. That he would grant us, that we being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, might ferve him without fear. 3 Matth. ix. 2. Jefus faid unto the fick of the palfy, Son, be of good cheer, thy fins be forgiven thee.

5 Rom. ii. 4. Or defpifeft thou the riches of his goodness, and forbearance, and long-fuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to re pentance? Chap. vii. 1, 2. What fhall we fay then? Shall we continue in fin, that grace may abound? God forbid: how thall we that are dead to fin, live any longer therein? Ver. 15. What then? fhall we fin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Chap. viii. 28. And we know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpofe. Phil. i. 12. But I would ye fhould underftand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me, have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel. Palm cxix. 71. It is good for me that I have been afflicted that I might learn thy ftatutes.

And left I fhould be exalted above measure, through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the meffenger of Satan to buffet me, left I fhould be exalted above measure. Prov. xxix. 23. A man's pride fhall bring him low: but honour fhall uphold the humble in fpirit. 2 Chron. xxxii 26. Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart (both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem), so that the wrath pf the Lord came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

But Jefburun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat; thou art grown thick; thou art covered with fatnefs: Then he forfook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his falvation. Pfalm cvi. 7. Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt, they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies, but provoked him at the fea, even at the Red Sea.

11 Pfalm xxx. II Thou haft turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou haft put off my fackcloth, and girded me with gladnefs. Rom. viii. 28. See figure 5. p. 171.

1 Jer. x. 19. Wo is me for my hurt, my wound is grievous: but I faid, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it. Pet. iii. 13. And who is he that
