Other Articles made after the Death of Henry of Naffau Prince of Orange, in favour of William of Naflau Prince of Orange, Succeffor to Henry; concluded the 27th of December 1647. but which are not to be of Force till after the Execution of the Treaty abovefaid between Spain and Holland, and confequently fhould be confider'd as an Appendix to it.

HEREAS Don Gafpar of Bracamonte and Guzman, Count of Pegnaranda, Gentleman of his Majefty's Bedchamber, of his Privy Council, his Ambaffador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary for the Treaty of a General Peace, on the part and in the Name of his faid Majefty; and Meflire J. van Knuyt, &c. Lord of Old and New Wofmar, and Reprefentative of the Nobility in the Affembly of the States of the Province of Zeeland, Ambaffador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary from the States General of the United Provinces for the Treaty of Peace, and firft Counsellor to the late Prince of Orange, on the part and in the name of the faid Prince, have made a certain Agreement on the 8th of January 1647. touching the Pretenfions which the faid Prince claim'd against his faid Majefty; and whereas fince the Deceafe of the faid Lord the Prince, the faid Parties contracting, viz. the Count of Pegnaranda in the name of his faid Majefty, and the faid Sieur van Knuyt in the name of the Lord the Prince of Orange, have at prefent concluded and agreed, That for the future the forefaid Agreement of the 8th of January 1647, fhall continue and remain in its full Force and Virtue, to be punctually obferv'd and executed in all Points, excepting what fhall be chang'd by this prefent Agreement as follows, viz.

I. That in order entirely to extinguish all Actions and Pretenfions which the faid Lord the Prince might have against his faid Majefty, he fhall give and yield abfolutely to the faid Lord the Prince, or (if he fhould

come to die before the Conclufion and Ratification of the forefaid Treaty of Peace) to his Heirs and Succeffors, the Land and Domain of Montfort, fituated about Ruremonde, with all the Appennages and Dependencies, Rights and Jurifdictions thereof, without any Reserve his faid Majefty promifing to augment the Revenues of the faid Land and Domain by Land fituated thereabout to the Value of two Thousand Florins, without Deduction or Reserve.

II. His faid Majefty fhall give and yield, over and above this, for the Benefit of the Lady the Princess Dowager of Orange, Mother to the faid Lord the Prince of Orange, the Town and Domain of Sevenbergen, with all the Rights, Jurifdictions and Revenues thereon depending, without any Reserve.

III. He fhall yield and grant moreover for the Benefit of the faid Lady Dowager the Land and Domain of Turnhout, fituated in Brabant, with the Caftle of Schoonbroek, and all the other Appennages and Dependencies, Rights and Jurifdictions, without any Referve; his faid Majefty promifing to add to the faid Land and Domain of Turnhout, for the Benefit of the faid Lady Princess Dowager of Orange, the Villages, Hamlets, and other Rights which formerly depended upon and belong'd to the faid Land and Domain, comprifing those which have been formerly fold and difimember'd by his faid Majefty, obliging himself to have them redeem'd, and to lay out upon the faid Redemption the Sum of twenty or twenty five Thousand Florins, and no more.

IV. His faid Majefty alfo promifing to content and fatisfy all who may have any Right, or who poffefs any part of the forefaid three Lands, Town and Domain of Montfort, Sevenbergen and Turnhout; and his Majesty obliges himself over and above, to difcharge the faid Parts of all Mortgages, Interefts, and all other Burdens, without any Referve; that fo the faid Lord the Prince, and the faid Lady the Princefs his Mother, their Heirs, Succeffors, &c. as is faid, may enjoy them freely and fully without any Controverfy or Engagement.

V. The whole on condition of holding all the faid Lands in Fee of his Majefty, excepting fuch as are held in Fee of others; and that the Catholick Religion be there maintain'd, as it is at prefent, and the Ecclefi

ATreaty of Peace between the Empire and Sweden, concluded and fign'd at Ofnabrug the 24th of October, 1648. The King of France was comprehended in this Treaty as an Ally of Sweden.

E it known to all and fingular whom it does concern, or whom it may in any manner concern, That after the Differences and Troubles which began feveral years ago in the Roman Empire, had come to fuch a height, that not only all Germany, but likewife fome neighbouring Kingdoms, especially Sweden and France, found themfelves fo involv'd in them, that from thence there arofe a long and cruel War; in the first place, between the moft Serene and moft Potent Prince and Lord, Ferdinand III. of Glorious Memory, chofen Emperor of the Romans, always Auguft, King of Germany, Hungary, Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, Sclavonia, &c, Archduke of Auftria, Duke of Burgundy, Brabant, Stiria, Carinthia and Carniola, Marquifs of Moravia, Duke of Luxemburg, of the Upper and Lower Silefia, Wirtemberg and Teck, Prince of Smabia, Count of Hapfburg, Tirol, Kyburg and Goricia, Landtgrave of Alfatia, Marquifs of the Sacred Empire, Burgovia, the Upper and Lower Lufatia, Lord of the Sclavonick Borders, Port Naon and Salines, his Confederates and Adherents on the one fide; and the moft Serene and moft Potent Prince and Lord Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, of the Goths and Vandals, Great Prince of Finland, Duke of Efthonia and Carelia, and Lord of Ingria, likewife of Glorious Memory, the Kingdom of Sweden, its Allies

and Confederates on the other fide: And after his Decease, between the moft Serene and moft Potent Prince and Lord Ferdinand III. elected Emperor of the Romans, always Auguft, &c. with his Allies and Adherents on the one fide; and the moft Serene and moft Potent Princefs and Lady Chriftina, Queen of Sweden, &c. her Allies and Adherents on the other fide; upon which en fu'd a great Effusion of Christian Blood, and Devaftation of feveral Provinces. At laft it fell out by an Effect of the Divine Bounty, that both fides turn'd their Thoughts towards the means of making Peace, and that by a mutual Agreement made at Hamburg the 25th of December N. S. or the 15th O. S. 1641. between the Parties, the 11th N. S. or the 1ft O. S. 1643. was by common Confent appointed for beginning the Affembly or Congrefs of Plenipotentiaries at Ofnabrug, and at Munster in Weftphalia. In confequence whereof, the Ambaffadors and Plenipotentiaries lawfully establish'd on both fides, having appear'd at the mention'd Time and Place, viz. on the part of the Emperor, the moft Illuftrious and Excellent Lords, Maximilian Count of Trautmansdorf and Weinsberg, Baron of Gleichenberg, Neuftat upon the Cockie, Negovia, Burgovia and Totzenbach, Lord of Teitnitz, Knight of the Golden Fleece, Privy Counfellor and Chamberlain to his Sacred Imperial Majefty, and Great Mafter of his Court; John Maximilian, Count of Lamberg, free Baron of Orteneck and Ottenftein, Lord of Stockam and Ammerang, Burgrave of Stayer, &c. and John Cranen, Chamberlain to his faid Sacred Imperial Majefty, Licentiate in the Laws, and Count Palatine, his Imperial Majefty's Aulick Counfellors. And on the part of the Queen of Sweden, the most Illuftrious and moft Excellent Lords, John Oxenstiern, Axelfon, Count of the Southern Morea, free Baron of Kincitha and Nynaas, Lord of Fyholm, Hornigholm, Sudorbo and Lidoo, Senator of the Kingdom of Sweden, and Counfellor of the Chancery; and John Adler Salvius, Lord of Adlersberg, Harsfield, Wildenbruck and Tullingen, Senator of the Kingdom of Sweden, Privy Counsellor to her Royal Majefty, and Chancellor of her Court. After having invok'd the Affiftance of God, and reciprocally exchang'd the Originals of their refpective full Powers, they tranf acted and agreed among themfelves, to the Glory of

God, and Safety of the Chriftian World (the Electors, Princes and States of the Sacred Roman Empire being prefent, approving and confenting) the Articles of Peace and Amity, whereof the Tenour follows.

The Re-eftablishment of Peace and A

mity.

I. That there be a Chriftian, univerfal and perpetual Peace, and a true and fincere Friendship and Amity between his Sacred Imperial Majefty, the Houfe of Auftria, and all his Allies and Adherents, and the Heirs and Succeffors of each of them, chiefly the King of Spain, and the Electors, Princes and States of the Empire, of the one fide; and her Sacred Royal Majesty, and the Kingdom of Sweden, her Allies and Adherents, and the Heirs and Succeffors of each of them, especially the most Christian King, the respective Electors, Princes and States of the Empire, of the other fide; and that this Peace be obferv'd and cultivated fincerely and feriously, fo that each Party may procure the Benefit, Honour and Advantage of one another, and thereby the Fruits of this Peace and Amity may be feen to grow up and flourish anew, by a fure and reciprocal maintaining of a good and faithful Neighbourhood between the Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Sweden reciprocally.

Troubles, in what Place or in what Manner foever Hoftilities may have been exercis'd by the one or the other Party; fo that neither for any of those things, nor upon any other Account or Pretext whatfoever, any Act of Hoftility or Enmity, Vexation or Hindrance fhall be exercis'd or fuffer'd, or caus'd to be exercis'd, either as to Perfons, Condition, Goods or Security, either by one's felf or by others, in private or openly, directly or indirectly, under form of Right or Law, or by open Deed, either within, or in any Place whatsoever without the Empire, notwithstanding all former Compacts to the contrary, but that all Injuries, Violences, Hoftilities and Damages, and all Expences that either fide has been oblig'd to be at, as well before as during the War, and all Libels by Words or Writing fhall be entirely forgotten, without any regard to Perfons or Things; fo that whatever might be demanded or pre
