The case demands that they proclaim aloud | sey, M. D., Professor of Anatomy, etc., at their necessities. Christians have long Dartmouth College," from John Tappan, been praying that the Lord of the harvest Esq., for gratuitous distribution in the same would send forth laborers into the extended way. and whitened field. God is now hearing and answering their supplications, at least, in some degree, by the conversion of a large number of young men, who are desirous of being educated for the ministry. But many of these are indigent, and have applied to the American Education Society for assistance. Let all then who have prayed for an increase of laborers for the harvest, prove by liberal contributions, the sincerity of their petitions. The present is a time of want in funds,-let it be seen that it is a time of abundant supply. The death of Rev. Dr. Gile, who was a member of the Board, having occurred since the last meeting of the Directors, it was voted to place on their records the following notice: As two or three very valuable articles from the pen of the Rev. Mr. Baird of Paris have appeared in this volume of the American Quarterly Register, it may be well here to state, that he is the constituted Agent of the American Education Society in France, for the purpose of obtaining statistics and information of various kinds for publication. PERKINS & MARVIN, No. 114 Washington Street, Boston, HAVE JUST PUBLISHED THE GREEK TESTAMENT, WITH ENGLISH NOTES, CRITICAL, PHILOLOGICAL, AND EXEGETICAL, PARTLY SELECTED AND ARRANGED FROM THE BEST COMMENTATORS, ANCIENT AND By the Rev. S. T. BLOOMFIELD, D. D., F. S. A., Vicar of The following is a copy of a note, received from Prof. Stuart of the Andover Theological Seminary, relative to Dr. Bloomfield's work. To Messrs. Perkins & Marvin, GENTLEMEN, I have received, and examined in many places, the second edition of Dr. Bloomfield's New Testament. I have been in possession of the first edition, almost from the time that it made its appearance in Great Britain, and am, in some good degree, familiar with the spirit, manner, and tone of the author's critical and exegetical notes. That he is a fine Greek scholar, his notes on Thucydides will sufficiently testify. That he has brought to the execution of the work before me, great diligence, severe study, widely-extended reading, and a power of condensing exegetical matter which is not often to be found, no impartial and enlightened reader, I think, will deny. That he has shown himself not to be a stickler for any mere party in criticism or theology, is also very manifest in the general tenor of the work throughout. Very seldom indeed, if ever, will any one, who may differ in opinion from him, find reason to complain of his spirit or his manner of writing. He has condensed many a useful criticism, and given the substance of it in his notes. I have followed him in his first edition. step by step through his notes on the Epistle to the Romans; and I can bear witness that he has exhibited much diligence and fidelity in presenting the various views that have been given of passages in it, when those views are of any grave im portance. Dr B. has, in my opinion, made a useful and very instructive book. The detail of criticism, as exhibited in essays or prolonged discussions, it was impossible that he should exhibit, without abandoning his original plan. The student who cannot dispense with minute and circumstantial criticism, will of course never expect to find much of it in a work, which is and professes to be a mere synopsis of criticism. But to him who needs and can rightly employ synopsis in such a work, Dr. Bloomfield's New Testament will be a very welcome aid. Most sincerely do I wish success to this and every effort to increase the knowledge of the Scriptures in our country. In speaking thus favorably of the work, I do not of course pledge myself to all the views which it exhibits. Dr. B. would be among the last to require or expect this from a friend to him, as I truly am, who examines for himself. But that his work may widely circulate, and that more taste for the study of the original Scriptures, and a better knowledge of them, may be promoted by it, I sincerely hope and expect. I wish you, therefore, gentlemen, all the success which your undertaking deserves, from the patronage of your country. Your friend and obedient servant, M. STUART, EACH number of the work will contain a portrait of some distinguished clergyman, accompanied with a biographical notice; and also a history of some College or Theological Seininary. An alphabetical List of the Graduates at all the Colleges out of New England, is in a course of preparation, and will appear in some future number or numbers. Articles showing the importance of a pious, able, and efficient ministry, and the necessity of increasing the number of such, may be expected. Statistics will be inserted as usual. LIST OF AGENTS.
