Of tbe Fall of Man, of Sin, and

of the Punishment thereof.

M OD having made a Covenant of Works

U and Life thereupon, a with our first Parents, and all their Pofterity in them b they being seduced by the fubtilcy and cemptation of Satan, did wilfully transgress the Law of their Creation, and break the Covenant in pato ing the forbidden fruit. ca Rom. 10.5. bRom. 5.12.13. 1 Cor.15.21,22. By this Sin they, and we in them, fell from original Righteousness and Communion with God, d and so became dead in Sin, and wholly defiled in all the faculties and parts of Soul and Body. f d Gon. 3. 6, 7, 8. cure is so great, that although reasonable Creatures do owe Obedience to him as their Creator, yet they could never have attained the reward of life, but by some voluntary condescention on God's part, which he hath been pleased to express by way of Covenant a Ifa 40 13 14 15 16 17 Job 9 32 33 Pfa.113 56, & 100 2, 3. II. The first Covenant made with man, was * Covenant of Works, b wherein life was pro-, mised to Adam, and in him to his pofterity, .. upon condition of perfect and personal Obedience. db Gal 12 c Rom 10 5 & 5 121 20 d Gox. 2 17 Gal 3 10

III. III, Man by his fall having made himself uncapable of life by that Covenant, the Lord was pleased to make a second, commonly called the Covenant of Grace ; wherein he frely offereth unto Sinners life and Salvation by Jesus Christ, requiring of chem Faith in him that they may be saved,' and promifing to give unto all those that are ordained unto life, his holy Spirit to make them willing ard able co believe. 5 • Gal. 3 21. This Covenant ofGrace is frequently fee forth in Scripture by the name of a Teftament in rem ference to the death of Jesus Christ che Teftas tor, and to the everlasting laberitance, with all things belonging to it, therein bequeathed. h Heb.7.22. & 9.15,16,17. Luke 22, 20. i Cor: 11. 25.
