C. M. From the xlii. Psalm of David. 1 AS pants the hart for cooling streams, When heated in the chase; So longs my soul, O GOD, for thee, 2 For thee, my God, the living GOD, O! when shall I behold thy face, 3 Why restless, why cast down, my soul? His aid for thee, and change these sighs 4 GOD of my strength, how long shall I, 5 My heart is pierced, as with a sword, 1 AS pants the wearied hart for cooling springs, 2 Why throb, my heart? why sink, my sadd'ning soul? Why droop to earth, with various woes oppress'd? My years shall yet in blissful circles roll, And peace be yet an inmate of this breast. 3 LORD, thy sure mercies, ever in my sight, My heart shall gladden through the tedious day; And 'midst the dark and gloomy shades of night, To thee, my GOD, I'll tune the grateful lay. 4 Why faint, my soul? why doubt JEHOVAH's aid? Thy Goo the Goo of mercy still shall prove; Within his courts thy thanks shall yet be paidUnquestion'd be his faithfulness and love! 1 LET me with light and truth be bless'd; Be these my guides to lead the way, Till on Thy holy hill I rest, And in thy sacred temple pray. 2 Then will I there fresh altars raise To GOD, who is my only joy; And well-tuned harps, with songs of praise, 3 Why then cast down, my soul? and why Who will thy ruin'd state repair. 1 WHILE I the King's loud praise rehearse, Indited by my heart, My tongue is like the pen of him That writes with ready art. 2 How matchless is thy form, O King! 3 Gird on thy sword, most mighty prince; 4 Ride on in state, and still protect Whilst thy right hand, with swift revenge, 5 How sharp thy weapons are to them Down, down they fall, while through their heart 5 But thy firm throne, O GOD, is fix'd, Thy sceptre's sway shall always last, 7 Because thy heart, by justice led, 8 Therefore did GoD, thy God, on thee 1 GOD is our refuge in distress, Torn piece-meal by the roaring tide. 2 A gentler stream with gladness still The city of our LORD shall fill, The royal seat of GOD most high: GOD dwells in Sion, whose fair towers 3 Submit to GOD's almighty sway, For him the Heathen shall obey, And earth her sovereign LORD confess: Our tower of refuge in alarms, As to our fathers in distress. 2 He shall assaulting foes repel, And with success our battles fight; 3 GOD is gone up, our LORD and King, And let the cheerful song rebound. 4 Your utmost skill in praise be shown, From the xlviii. Psalm of David. 1 THE LORD, the only GoD, is great, 2 In Sion we have seen perform'd In pledge that God, for times to come, 3 Let Sion's mount with joy resound; 4 Compass her walls in solemn pomp, 5 Her forts and palaces survey, 6 This GOD is ours, and will be ours, PSALM 43. From the 1. Psalm of David. PART I. II. 2. 1. THE LORD hath spoke, the mighty GoD From dawning light till day declines: Where beauty in perfection shines. 2 Our God shall come, and keep no more Misconstrued silence as before, But wasting flames before him send; 3 Assemble all my saints to me, PART II. II. 2. 1 ATTEND, my people; Israel, hear; Thy strong accuser I'll appear; Thy GoD, thine only GOD am I: "T is not of offerings I complain, Which, daily in my temple slain, My sacred altar did supply. 2 The sacrifices I require Are hearts which love and zeal inspire, And I will set thee safe and free, And thou shalt praise thy gracious God. 3 Consider this, ye thoughtless men! And none will dare your cause to own: From the li. Psalm of David. 1 HAVE mercy, LORD, on me, As thou wert ever kind; 2 Wash off my foul offence, And cleanse me from my sin; For I confess my crime, and see How great my guilt has been. 3 Against thee, LORD, alone, And only in thy sight, Have I transgress'd; and, though condemn'd, Must own thy judgment right. 4 In guilt each part was form'd Of all this sinful frame; In guilt I was conceived, and born |
