10. Ομολογοῦμεν ἓν βάπτισμα εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν· 11. Προσδοκῶμεν ἀνάστασιν νεκρῶν,

12. Καὶ ζωὴν τοῦ μέλλοντος αἰῶνος.

ΤΟΥΣ δὲ λέγοντας, Ην ποτὲ ὅτε οὐκ ἦν, καὶ πρὶν γεννηθῆναι οὐκ ἦν, ἢ ὅτι ἐξ οὐκ ὄντων ἐγένετο, ἢ ἐξ ἑτέρας ὑποστάσεως ἢ οὐσίας, φάσκοντας εἶναι ῥευστὸν ἢ ἀλλοιωτὸν τὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ Υἱὸν, τουτοὺς ἀναθεματίζει ἡ καθολικὴ καὶ ἀποστολικὴ ̓Εκκλησία.

II.

1. ΠΙΣΤΕΥΟΜΕΝ εἰς ἕνα Θεὸν Πατέρα παντοκράτορα, πάντων, ἀοράτων τε καὶ ὁρατῶν, ποιητήν·

2. Καὶ εἰς ἕνα Κύριον, Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν,

τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ,

γεννηθέντα ἐκ Θεοῦ Πατρὸς μονογενή,

τουτέστιν ἐκ τῆς οὐσίας τοῦ Πατρὸς,

Θεὸν ἐκ Θεοῦ,

Φῶς ἐκ Φωτὸς,

Θεὸν ἀληθινὸν ἐκ Θεοῦ ἀληθινοῦ,

γεννηθέντα οὐ ποιηθέντα,

ὁμοούσιον τῷ Πατρί·

δι ̓ οὗ τὰ παντὰ ἐγένετο, τὰ τε ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς

καὶ τὰ ἐν τῇ γῇ, ὁρατὰ τε καὶ ἀόρατα·

3. Τὸν δι' ἡμᾶς τοὺς ἀνθρώπους καὶ διὰ τὴν ἡμετέραν

σωτηρίαν

κατελθόντα,

καὶ σαρκωθέντα,

τουτέστι τέλειον ἄνθρωπον λαβόντα,

ψυχὴν καὶ σῶμα καὶ νοῦν καὶ πάντα, εἴ τι ἔστιν ἄνθρω

πος, χωρὶς ἁμαρτίας,

οὐκ ἀπὸ σπέρματος ἀνδρὸς,

οὐδὲ ἐν ἀνθρώπῳ,

ἀλλ ̓ εἰς ἑαυτὸν σάρκα ἀναπλασάντα εἰς μίαν ἁγίαν

ἑνότητα,

οὐ καθάπερ ἐν προφήταις ἐνέπνευσε τε καὶ ἐλάλησε καὶ ἐνήργησεν,

ἀλλὰ τελείως ἐνανθρωπησάντα,

ὁ γὰρ Λόγος σάρξ ἐγένετο,

οὐ τροπὴν ὑποστὰς,

οὐδὲ μεταβαλὼν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ Θεότητα εἰς ἀνθρωπότητα, εἰς μίαν συνενωσάντα ἑαυτοῦ ἁγίαν τελειότητα τε καὶ Θεότητα,

εὶς γὰρ ἐστὶν Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς καὶ οὐ δύο,

ὁ αὐτὸς Θεὸς, ὁ αὐτὸς Κύριος, ὁ αὐτὸς βασιλεύς·

4. Παθόντα δὲ τὸν αὐτὸν ἐν σάρκι,

5. Καὶ ἀναστάντα,

6. Καὶ ἀνελθόντα εἰς τοὺς οὐρανοὺς ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ σώματι, ἐνδόξως καθισάντα ἐν δεξίᾳ τοῦ Πατρός·

7. Ερχόμενον ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ σώματι ἐν δόξῃ

κρῖναι ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς·

οὗ τῆς βασιλείας οὐκ ἔσται τέλος

8. Καὶ εἰς τὸ ̔́Αγιον Πνεῦμα πιστεύομεν, τὸ λαλῆσαν ἐν νόμῳ,

καὶ κηρυξὰν ἐν τοῖς προφήταις,

καὶ καταβὰν ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰορδάνην,
λαλοῦν ἐν ἀποστόλοις,

οἰκοῦν ἐν ἁγίοις·

οὕτως δὲ πιστεύομεν ἐν αὐτῷ,

ὅτι ἐστὶ Πνεῦμα ἅγιον,

Πνεῦμα Θεοῦ,

Πνεῦμα τέλειον,

Πνεῦμα παράκλητον,

ἄκτιστον,

ἐκ τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐκπορευόμενον,

καὶ ἐκ τοῦ Υἱοῦ λαμβανόμενον καὶ πιστευόμενον· 9. Πιστευόμεν εἰς μίαν καθολικὴν καὶ ἀποστολικὴν

ἐκκλησίαν·

10. Καὶ εἰς ἓν βάπτισμα μετανοίας

11. Καὶ εἰς ἀνάστασιν νεκρῶν,

καὶ κρίσιν δικαίαν ψυχῶν καὶ σωμάτων·

12. Καὶ εἰς βασιλείαν οὐρανῶν,

καὶ εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

ΤΟΥΣ δὲ λέγοντας, Οτι ἦν ποτὲ ὅτε οὐκ ἦν ὁ Υἱὸς ἢ τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ̔́Αγιον, ἢ ὅτι ἐξ οὐκ ὄντων ἐγένετο, ἢ ἐξ ἑτέρας ὑποστάσεως ἢ οὐσίας, φάσκοντας εἶναι τρεπτὸν ἢ ἀλλοιωτὸν τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἢ τὸ ̔́Αγιον Πνεῦμα, τουτοὺς ἀναθεματίζει ἡ καθολικὴ καὶ ἡ ἀποστολικὴ ἐκκλησία, ἡ μήτηρ ὑμῶν τε καὶ ἡμῶν. Καὶ παλιν ἀναθεματίζομεν τοὺς μὴ ὁμολογοῦντας ἀνάστασιν νεκρῶν, καὶ πάσας αἱρέσεις τὰς μὴ ἐκ ταύτης τῆς ὀρθῆς πίστεως οὖσας.

8. SYMBOLUM CONSTANTINOPOLITANUM®.

THE Creed put forth by the Council of Constantinople is, as I have already hinted, identical almost to the letter with the former of the Creeds given by Epiphanius. The additions therein made (it is said, by Gregory Nyssenh) to the original Nicene Creed, and already extensively accepted, now received the full sanction of the Church Universal.

The Creed varies, as it is well known, in one important particular from the formula now used throughout Western Christendom: it makes no mention of the procession from the Son in the eighth article. When the "Filioque" was first inserted is not certainly known. The earliest copy of the Constantinopolitan Creed in which it is found is that which was recited at the third Council of Toledo, A.D. 589. But there are doubts as

to the genuineness of the text. assigned by some, as a Gallican Council, A.D. 447 or 448, and the first Council of Bracara, A.D. 411. But though Confessions of faith, containing the assertion of the procession from the Son, are given as recited at these Councils, the Constantinopolitan formula is not one of them.
