for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance b." “ He taketh away the first that he may establish the second, by the which we are sanctified through the offering of Jesus Christ once for all i." Not “ that he should offer himself often, for then must he often have suffered from the foundation of the world; but now once in the end of the world, hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself k.” He “ once suffered for our sins the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God.” “ His own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we being dead to sins should live unto righteousness “ He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed n." and, in him, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous ; and he is the propitiation for our sins ",” and “ for the sins of the whole world." In him “ we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins s.” Thus, although “ all have sinned and come short of the glory of God+;" yet there is
now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit u ;" for Christ hath“ washed us from our sins in his own bloodw; ” by him, we are “ made heirs according to the hope of eternal life,” we “receive the adoption of sons y,” we are “ made partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world?;" we“ put on the new (man) which is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him a;" we are ransomed “ from the power of the grave b;” we are redeemed from death b; and we “reap life everlasting." Thus, “as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive d.”
These, then, are the two covenants which have been established between the Deity and

man, in consequence of “ Adam's transgression :” The covenant of works, and the covenant of the cross ; the covenant of righteousness, and the covenant of “ the blood of Jesus Christ; the covenant of justice, and the covenant of grace; the covenant of death, and the covenant of life; " the Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil,” and “ the Tree of Life;" the Adamite covenant, and the Christian covenant.
Previously to the expulsion of our first parents from “ Eden,” “unto Adam also, and to his wife, did the Lord God make coats of skins and clothed them.". Thus GOD covered their nakedness f. The nakedness which had become visible to them, was spiritual nakedness ; this nakedness they endeavoured to conceal by means of their own contriyanceh, “that the shame of their nakedness might not appear';”. but, still, they were naked; therefore God, “ clothed 'them." This act of the Deity, then, represented his clothing them with the garments of salvation k.” Animals must have been slain to furnish these “ skins" with which the Lord GOD“ clothed them ;” and, as permission to use any “ moving thing that liveth,” as “ meat,' was not given until after the Deluge!, these

animals so slain, must have been killed as a sacrifice; the shedding of their blood was a typical representation of that blood-shedding whereby the redemption of mankind was to be purchased ; and the “ coats of skins” which they furnished, and with which Adam and Eve were “ clothed,” were figures of that sheltering covenant whereby their “nakedness” was covered that covenant, sprinkled with the blood of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Adam was “the figure* of Him who was to come &;" that is, of Him, who was announced as the “ seed” of the woman b; Christ being styled “ the last Adamo.” Adam was, as regarded “ the inward mandat,” created “ in the image of Gode *;" Christ was in his spiritual nature, “ the image of the invisible Godfy.” The “outward man' ||” in which the “inward man of Adam dwelt, was “ flesh and bloodh,” it was “ of the earth, earthyi;” Christ“ was made flesh
