THE Ceremonies peculiar to the TENEBRÆOFFICE, on the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday Evenings, of HOLY WEEK, are of very ancient usage in the Church, and considered as so many mystical allusions to the History of the Passion of Christ. Thus: the extinguishing of the yellow wax-tapers in the triangular candlestick, one in succession after the other, at the Anthem to each of the Psalms, at Matins and Lauds, and of those on the Altar at the six last verses of the Benedictus, figuratively represent the flight of the Apostles when Christ was apprehended; and the preserving the white candle in the uppermost angle thereof, lighted, his DIVINITY, which could not be separated by |
