HOME RELIGIOUS STATISTICS OF SCANDINAVIA. NORWAY.-Population, 1,750,889. According to the census only 5,100 Dissenters. Established Church, Lutheran. Five Bishoprics, 336 parishes. A Norwegian Missionary Society and a Baptist Missionary Society. Two Bible Societies: one called the Norwegian and the other the Stavanger Bible Society. Education is compulsory and almost universal. Most towns have high schools, and 13 have colleges.

SWEDEN.-Population, 4,250,412. All Lutherans (except 2,409 Dissenters, according to the census). The Lutheran Established Church has 1 Archbishop, 11 Bishops, and 3,200 Clergy. At Stockholm there is an " "Evangelical Fatherland Institution," out of which has arisen a Swedish Missionary Society, which has 5 Missionaries among the Kunama people, to the north of Abyssinia. (The original Swedish Mission to India being now incorporated with the Leipzig Missionary Society.) There is also a Swedish Bible Society, and a Lapland Missionary Society. The Baptists have originated a Baptist Missionary Society. Education is compulsory. Ninety-seven per cent. of all the children between eight and fifteen are found in the public schools.

DENMARK.-Population, (with Faroe Islands and Iceland,) 1,863,119. Almost all Lutherans (Evangelical). The Established Church has 10 Bishops, 69 Provosts, 1,100 Parishes, and 1,200 Ministers. Also a Tract Society, a Sailors' Society, and one for Danish emigrants. A Home Missionary Society is actively engaged and with great success. The census specifies 1,857 Roman Catholics, 1,430 Calvinists of the Reformed Church, 2,069 Moravians, and 3,157 Baptists, besides 1,181 not specified. Denmark deserves to be held in honour by all Christians, as the first European country whose Government countenanced and assisted at an carly period the work of Missions. In 1705 Frederick the Fourth sent out Ziegenbalg and Plutsho to Tranquebar

(South India). Thirteen Missionaries and Chaplains are supported in Greenland, partly by the Government and partly by a Missionary Society. The old Missionary Society is now merged in the Leipzig Missionary Society; but recently a new Missionary Society has been established, which has sent out Missionaries to South India. There is a Danish Bible Society and Icelandic Bible Society. Education is compulsory on all children between eight and fourteen. There are 13 colleges, and 2,940 common schools.

BIBLE AND TRACT SOCIETIES.

1. THE BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY has circulated in NORWAY 34,446 copies and portions of Scriptures, and has employed colporteurs; total cost, £2,464. In SWEDEN, 73,546 copies, with colporteurage, at a cost of £3,590. In DENMARK, 21,733 copies, with colporteurage, at a cost of £1,631.

2. THE AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY circulated 463 copies of Scriptures and portions in NORWAY; in SWEDEN, 12,527; and in DENMARK, 400; at a cost of about £400.

3. THE NATIONAL BIBLE SOCIETY OF SCOTLAND circulated 1,629 Scriptures and portions in SWEDEN and in the FAROE ISLANDS; cost, £78. 4. THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY has granted, in money and books, £214 to SWEDEN.

EDITIONS OF THE SCRIPTURES.

1. NORWAY.-Two Editions of the Norse Bible, and an Edition of a New Version of the Old Testament; also a New Testament in Norwegian Lapponese, through the Norwegian Bible Society, by British and Foreign Bible Society.

2. SWEDISH.-Editions of the Bible in Native and Roman type; a Lapponese Bible for Russ and Swedish Lapps; also the entire Finnish Bible by British and Foreign Bible Society. also a

HOME RELIGIOUS STATISTICS OF GERMANY.

1. In endeavouring to present the various denominations of Germany, with Bohemia, Hungary, &c., there will be some difficulty, owing to the peculiar political condition of these countries.

2. The GERMAN EMPIRE (all Germany not Austrian) has a population of 40,409,998, of which 25,581,709 are Protestant; 14,867,091 are Roman Catholic; 97,593 of various Churches; and 512,171 Jews. The "Old Catholics," with one Bishop, Reinkins, are to be found in Prussian Germany, and also in Austria and Bohemia.

3. The AUSTRIAN EMPIRE, which comprises Austria proper and its dependencies, with Bohemia (Moravia), Hungary (with Transylvania), Croatia, and Sclavonia, has a population of 35,900,000, of which about 23,940,000 are Roman Catholics, with about 13 Archbishops, 60 Bishops, and 65,000 Clergy, 4,000,000 Greek Catholics, with an Archbishop and 10 Bishops, and about 3,600,000 Protestants.

THE GERMAN EMPIRE.

PRUSSIA (the original kingdom before 1866).—(1.) Evangelical Church, (union of Reformed and Lutheran,) 11,592,451. 400 Superintendents (Bishops), 6,329 Ministers, 130 Catechists, and 9,429 Churches. (2.) Roman Catholics, 7,115,851. Two Archbishops, 6 Bishops, 6,574 Clergy, 7,923 Churches. (3.) Old Lutheran Church. Seven Superintendents, and 50 parishes. (4.) Moravians. 17 Churches, 73 Ministers and Home Missionaries, 7,200 adherents. (5.) The Evangelical Churches of Elberfeld and Barmen. 126 Churches. There are also an Inner Mission, Evangelical Society, and several local Societies; also, a Gustavus Adolphus Society, for Protestant objects; an Evangelical John's Institute; Kaiserwerth Deacon*The Free Church of Scotland, and the American Board of Foreign Missions, are also assisting in the support of Pastors in Austria and Bohemia.

The Missionary Societies of Germany are noticed in the list of Societies. Education is compulsory in the German Empire. Schools in every town and village: 21 Universities, 1,154 Professors, and 13,990 Students.

SAXONY (Kingdom of).—(1.) Lutherans, 2,279,882. 1,147 Clergy, 1,330 Churches. (2.) Reformed, 5,239. (3.) Roman Catholics, 47,441. One Vicar, 30 Churches, 2 Convents. (4.) German Catholics, 1,708. (5.) Jews, 1,964. WURTEMBERG (Kingdom of).—(1.) Evangelical Church, 1,200,000. 1,164 Churches, 1,140 Clergy. Within this Church are many Pietists. (2.) Roman Catholics, 533,694. One Bishop, 904 Clergy. Also, an Independent Church at Kornthal, and a few Lutheran-Baptists.

BADEN and four other minor States.-The Evangelical Church has 1,225,057 adherents.

BAVARIA (Kingdom of).—(1.) Roman Catholics, 4,774,464. Two Archbishops, 6 Bishops, 57 Monasteries, 76 Convents. (2.) Protestant Church, 1,320,000. 1,062 parishes, 1,584 Churches, 1,256 Clergy.

THE AUSTRIAN EMPIRE.

1. AUSTRIA PROPER.-45,641 Lutherans, 25 parishes; 1,910 Reformed, 3 parishes; other Protestants, about 30,000,

2. BOHEMIA, MORAVIA, and AUSTRIAN SILESIA.-Protestants of the two communions, 204,750. 101 parishes. Moravians have 2 Home Missionaries and 4 Agents in Bohemia.

3. GALICIA has 31,195 Protestants, chiefly Lutherans. 26 parishes, 90 schools. 4. HUNGARY has 2,350,262 Lutherans and Calvinists. TRANSYLVANIA has 509,877 Protestants, of which 48,000 are Unitarians. In CROATIA there are 89,678 Protestants; also a few Lutheran Baptists, called "Nazarenes." There are 27 principal Bible Societies in Germany, besides Auxiliaries. Education has been much neglected in the Austrian Empire, until within the last four years. In 1848-9 education was made compulsory, and this was at once carried out in the German provinces of the Empire. There are 7 Universities, 548 Professors, and 10,628 Students.

CHAPLAINS.

Church of Scotland, partially supported, three, £150; Free Church of Scotland, one, £52; Colonial and Continental Society, five; Pilgrim Mission Crischona, one; all in Germany.

BIBLE AND TRACT SOCIETIES, &c.

1. THE BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY has circulated in Germany 322,854 copies and portions of Scripture, which, with cost of Colporteurs, amounts to £29,205. In Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, and Croatia, 152,259 copies and portions, which, with cost of Colporteurs, &c., amounts to £20,132.

2. THE TRINITARIAN BIBLE SOCIETY has agents and Colporteurs in Germany.

3. THE NATIONAL BIBLE SOCIETY OF SCOTLAND has circulated 5,183 Scriptures and portions, and employs Colporteurs at a cost of £383 in Hungary. It has circulated in Germany 45,583 Scriptures and portions, and employs Colporteurs at a cost of £993

4. THE AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY has circulated 23,562 copies of Scriptures and portions in Germany.

5. THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY has granted in money and books to Germany to the amount of £1,501.

EDITIONS OF THE SCRIPTURES.

1. Germany. THE BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY has published editions of Luther and Van Ess's Bible, Gosner's and Kistemacher's version of the New Testament in German; also Judeo-German Old Testament and Psalms; also the Bible in Upper and Lower Wendish.

2. Bohemia. The Bible in the Gothic and Roman Characters, by the British and Foreign Bible Society.

3. Hungary. The Bible in Hungarian; the New Testament and Psalms in Hungarian-Wendish, and the Gospel and Acts in Slovenian, by the British and Foreign Bible Society.

4. Croatia and Sclavonia. The Bible in Croat-Sclavo, by the British and Foreign Bible Society.

HOLLAND.-The population of Holland in 1872 was 3,674,402. 1. The Reformed Church, 2,074,734. This is the National Church. 1,306 Churches, 1,559 Ministers. 2. The Lutheran Church, 68,067. Paid by the State. 3. The Remonstrant Church (paid by the State), 54,000. 21 Churches, and 26 Ministers. 4. Mennonite, (Baptist Churches,) 42,000. 117 Churches, 122 Ministers. (Self-supporting, independent in Church government.) 5. Walloon Churches. 17 Congregations, 26 Ministers. (Supported by the State.) 6. Reformed Church. 44 Churches, 17 Ministers. 7. Christian Dissenting Reformed Church. 308 Churches, 210 Ministers, and 95,000 adherents. 8. Moravians. Two Churches, 4 Ministers. 9. Roman Catholics. One Archbishop, 6 Bishops, 1,861 Clergy, and 1,069 Churches. The Catholic Jansenists have also a Bishop of their own. The salaries of sundry Presbyterian Ministers settled in Holland are paid by the Government. Holland has 10 Missionary Societies, whose sphere of labour is mainly in the Dutch islands of Java, the Moluccas, &c., and 1 Bible Society. Education is spreading rapidly, but among the rural population one-fourth of the men and one-third of the women can neither read nor write. This state of things is, however, passing away, as there are now 3,853 public and private schools, nearly 11,000 Teachers, and 439,066 pupils under instruction.

BELGIUM.-Population, 5,087,105. With the exception of about 13,000 Protestants, and 1,500 Jews, the whole population is nominally Roman Catholic. 1. Roman Catholics, above 5,000,000. One Archbishop, 5 Bishops, 993 Convents, of which 848 were for women. Supported by the State at a cost of £182,730. 2. The Protestant Evangelical Church. 12 Pastors receive £2,771 from the State. 3. The Anglican Church has 8 Ministers, and receives £600 from the State. 4. The Belgian Evangelical Society is composed chiefly of converts from Romanism. 20 Churches, besides out-stations 21 Ministers, besides Colporteurs. 5. There are four Bible Societies in Belgium. Some Colporteurs are employed by them. Education is not compulsory, and is almost entirely in the hands of the Clergy, and, to a great extent, of the Jesuits. Thirty per cent of the adult population are unable to read and write. There are 3 Universities.
