Allusions to English translations or imitations of Horace's writings will be found under the Section, Direct Mention of Horace. To the Appendix of each author is prefixed a bibliography, which includes only those writings of the author in which I have found allusions to Horace. In the case of Steele, for instance, whose works have not been published collectively, it would have been unnecessarily tedious to give a complete list of his separate writings, in many of which there is no reference to Horace. The place of publication is given only when it is other than London. The expression curiosa felicitas, used by Petronius as descriptive of Horace, I have incorporated as a Horatian phrase; for it has been adopted by all critics of Horace, and its prevailing use is to suggest the peculiar attribute which Horace possessed pre-eminently.
