sight may be pleasing unto me, and all that is unjust in Thy sight hateful to me. Give me, O God, a mind loving what Thou lovest, and despising all that is displeasing to Thee. Give me Thy Spirit to govern my every word, to guide my every work, that justly ministering to these Thy servants, I may please Thee, and appear at length with joy before Thy judgment Throne, Who livest and reignest God, world without end. Amen.

For Husband or Wife.

MOST loving God, of

Whose kindness and mercy there is no end, grant to us and to all Christian married people whom Thou hast bound together in Holy Matrimony, to honour the state into which we have entered, and to live in accordance with it. Grant us to love one another as Christ loved the Church, that He might be the more loved in return. Grant us to live together in holiness and concord, and that we [and our children] may be blessed by Thee, both now and to all eternity. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Parent's Prayer.

FAT

ATHER of mercy, Who according to Thine eternal counsel hast created man for Thine honour and his own happiness: I thank Thee for the children which Thy Divine mercy hath entrusted to me, and offer them to Thee as beings which Thou hast created, Who art indeed their Father, Who hast created them for immortality, Who hast by holy baptism received them into the fold of Thy Church, and hast consecrated their souls by the grace of Thy Holy Spirit to be Thy temple. Bless, O Lord, these Thy creatures, the work of Thine hands: ward off all misfortunes from their bodies and souls, and lead them in the way of life, that they may walk perfectly before Thee. Enlighten their understanding that they may employ it according to Thy Divine pleasure. Strengthen them with holy patience, that they may in all troubles hold fast to Thee. Help them to lay up a good store in Thy Heavenly Kingdom. May Thy holy will be done concerning them in all things. Give me light, O Heavenly Father, to bring them up Christianly according to Thy

holy will, to teach them to keep Thy commandments, and to put away all wickedness from them. May Thy Divine grace be with me to help me to accomplish the work Thou hast entrusted to me, that I hereafter united with them in Thy Kingdom, may praise Thee eternally through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Teacher's Prayer. ALMIGHTY GOD, I am called to awaken and cultivate the powers of the young, and to fashion them after the likeness of Thy Son: Father of all, strengthen me that I may accomplish this onerous duty lovingly and zealously. Teach me to treat the young committed to my care as a most precious treasure for which I must straitly answer to Thee. Make my own character more perfect, that in all my words and works I may set a good example. Set before mine eyes Thy Son's Divine Love of children: make me profitable to my pupils by instruction, example, and prayer. Be Thou near to watch over both them and me; for what shall it profit me to plant and water unless Thou givest the increase: be with

me, therefore, that my labours may bring forth fruit pleasing unto Thee, both here and in eternity: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for a Youth. ALMIGHTY and

most

merciful Father, I come to Thee for protection, having no confidence in my own strength, and knowing myself to be as a helpless child that can do nothing for itself. Unto Thee, O God, I commend the care of my soul. Defend me from my ghostly enemies, from all who desire to lead me astray, from all who would teach me to sin, from my own evil passions, and from my own weakness and folly. Keep me from wantonness and mischief, from the temptations of the flesh, from sins of impurity in thought, word and deed, and from the temptations of my age and station. Teach me to submit myself with obedience and humility to my parents, and to all that are set over me; and to labour diligently to do my duty in that state of life to which it has pleased Thee to call me. Conform my will to Thine, O God, and dispose of me and of my life according to Thy good

A Child's Prayer.

[ocr errors]

THANK Thee, God, merciful Father, for all the good things I have received from Thee, and particularly that I was made Thy child in Holy Baptism, and that I have Christian parents to care for me and teach me. Repay them, O God, a thousand times in this world and in the next for all they have done for me. Make me meek and obedient, O God, and grateful to those who do me good. Teach me to love them and help them as much as I can now and all my life long. Make me good, and bless me, and my father and mother, brothers and sisters, teachers and friends: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grant that I may, with gentleness of spirit, and singleness of heart, and willingness of mind, serve those under whom I am placed; and that I may not either murmur against them, or envy those who are seated in a higher estate that I may obey them in all their honest commands, in all fear and true respect, not with eye-service as menpleasers, but with all my heart; and the rather, because Thy commandment bindeth me so to do. Grant that, serving them diligently, faithfully, and carefully, I may avoid their displeasure, and obtain Thy favour and blessing, and at the end of my days come to that blessed place, where Thou, with the Father, and Blessed Spirit dost reign, world without end, Amen.

In Tribulation.

ESU, most sweet Comforter

of the depressed, and Light of those that are in darkness, Calm of the tempest tossed, Health of the wounded, Who camest into the world to save Thy creatures from the slavery of sin, to dispel the clouds of mourning, and to make the vale of misery a Paradise of all delights, deliver, I pray Thee, me, wretched and oppressed, from these bitter waves of misery and trouble beating over me. I confess, O

am tor

Lord, how justly mented with so many griefs and trials, for I have often foolishly taken pleasure in provoking Thee. I confess that heavy words and sorrow of heart are my due, for that I have all my life sought broad ways, and pleasures, without lifting up my eyes unto Thee. But rebuke me not in Thy wrath, suffer not mine enemy to rejoice over me: for he hateth good, and because I struggle to escape from sin, he pursues me, and desires to cast me into mischief and iniquity, that he may drag me into the pit. Leave me not, my Deliverer, my Defender, my Helper; leave me not, but guide me in the right way, and change my grief into joy, and my fear into rejoicing. Like the disobedient Jonah, I am tossed in this sea for not hearkening unto Thy word: full of grief, I cry unto Thee, my Lord and God, and implore Thee, the All-merciful, that as Thou didst hear him crying unto Thee from the depths in the midst of the sea, so Thou wouldest hear me when I cry unto Thee in the troubles that overwhelm me. All-merciful God, quiet my thoughts, calm the storm of my sufferings, sweeten the bitterness within

me. Nevertheless since Thy Divine Providence hath sent me this trouble for the good of my soul (for we must through much tribulation enter into Thy Kingdom), I bow my head, and receive this trouble at Thy right hand as a chosen gift, as an exceeding great boon. This only I ask, Ŏ Lover of men, of Thy perfect goodness, that as trouble increases, Thou wouldest increase grace in me, strengthened by which I shall fear nothing, not even the whole of hell raging against me: but, being full of courage, shall say with David, The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom then shall I fear; the Lord is the strength of my life, of whom then shall I be afraid. Glory be to Thee, O Jesus, world without end. Amen.

LORD, the comfort of the sorrowful, the joy of the mourners, and our refuge in time of trouble, break not a leaf driven to and fro. Pursue not the dry stubble: write not bitter things against me punish me not for the sins of my youth. Deal not with me according to my sins, for I have provoked Thy wrath and indignation against
