And always to desire to follow Thee:

To fly from myself, and to fly to Thee:

That I may be defended by Thee:

To fear for myself, and to fear Thee:

That I may be amongst those chosen by Thee:

To distrust myself, and trust in Thee:

To desire to obey because of Thee:

To love nothing beside Thee:

To be poor for Thy sake. Look upon me, that I may love Thee:

Call me, that I may see Thee:

And eternally rejoice in Thee. Amen.

I BESEECH Thee, Lord

Jesu Christ, that the sweet and living power of Thy Love may withdraw my heart from the love of all things under heaven: may die for the love of Thy love, Who for love of me didst die upon the Cross: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.

A DEVOUT OBLATION OF OUR BODIES AND SOULS TO GOD.

HOLY TRINITY, one God, have mercy on me, and help me now and always, that I may not delight in vain and transitory things.

O most Blessed Lord, I adore Thy Divine Majesty with my body and soul; with all the members and senses of the one, and with all the powers and faculties of the other: and I humbly offer them up all unto Thee, Who gavest them to me, to do and suffer with Thy grace whatever shall be pleasing unto Thee: Beseeching Thee that none of these things which I now dedicate to Thy holy service may ever offend Thee.

Grant, O Lord, that my tongue may be refrained from idle and sinful speech, my hands from wicked actions, my heart from unlawful desires, my eyes from vain and dangerous objects, my ears from hearkening to what is frivolous and hurtful, and my whole man, both interior and exterior, from every thing that displeases Thee.

Grant, O Lord, that I may so resist the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil, in this life, that hereafter I

may be admitted to the everlasting joys of Thy Heavenly Kingdom. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BESEECH Thee, O most

merciful Lord Jesus, that Thou wouldest protect me from the danger of business and inordinate care; and so defend me from the temptation of this world that I may never be ensnared by any of its empty pleasures. Keep me, O Lord, from all excessive sadness, grief, and worldly | fear, and from whatever Thou knowest to be an hindrance to my soul. And I pray Thee, O Lord, that I may be delivered not only from the vanities of the world, but also from those miseries which proceed from the common curse upon mankind and the universal corruption of nature, wherewith I am SO much oppressed, that I have not liberty of spirit to behold Thee when I would. Help me, O Lord, that flesh and blood may not overcome me, and cause me to prefer a short and deceitful pleasure before an immense and eternal joy; that I make not less account of the honours and treasures of Thine everlasting kingdom

than of the vain honours and perishing treasures of the world: and, lastly, that I may not be supplanted by the craft and wiles of the enemy, who never ceases to endeavour to compass my destruction. Give me, O Lord, spiritual prudence to discern, courage to resist, patience to suffer, and constancy to persevere. Give me for all worldly comforts the most sweet consolation of the Holy Ghost; and instead of carnal pleasure, infuse into my soul the pure love of Thy Holy Name. In truth, O God, all those necessaries which our bodies require are but irksome to the fervent spirit, which if it could would ever rest in Thee, yet though it is not lawful for us to forsake these things, we are forbidden by Thy holy Law to seek them more for pleasure than necessity. Grant me, therefore, Thy grace, that avoiding all superfluity and excess, we may so desire and use things temporal, that they be to us for an occasion of thankfulness, but never of offending Thee; Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

A THANKSGIVING. HANKS be to Thee, O God, for all Thy benefits

TH

bestowed upon us from the first moment of our creation. Thanks be to Thee, that when we were nothing Thou didst create us, men, in Thine own image and similitude. Thanks be to Thee, that when we were lost by our own sins, Thou didst in Thy mercy redeem us by the blood of Jesus Christ. Thanks be to Thee, because Thou hast by Thy Holy Spirit given us ability to profess the true faith. Thanks be to Thee, for all the things which Thy mercy has bestowed upon us, health, peace, food, success, and every other benefit which we enjoy at Thine hand. Keep us under the care of Thy providence, now and for evermore, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD JESU CHRIST give me grace to do Thy bidding, and bid what Thou wilt. Make my soul ready for Thine Advent, and come when Thou wilt. Give me patience; enough, at least; perfect, if it please Thee; and come to me as Thou wilt, O Thou Who art the Saviour of all them that put their trust in Thee. Put Thy Death, Cross, and Passion, Thy merits and Thy Blood betwixt Thy judg

ment and my soul, now and for evermore, and especially at the hour of my death. Let not death, I pray, come upon me suddenly, neither find me unprepared, nor be so terrible but that I may keep to my last breath Faith, Hope, and Charity, memory, and a sound understanding. And then be Thou my protector, O God. Grant to me mercy and pardon of my sins, to Thy Church peace and concord, to me, the greatest of sinners, grace in this life and glory in that which is to come. So, so come Thou to me, O Lord Jesu, and have mercy npon

me.

GOD, Who hast created all things, Thou knowest my sins. I pray Thee pardon them, and have mercy upon me, for I have sinned greatly against Thee. Give me, Lord, firm, faith, truthfulness, a good disposition, honesty, patience in tribulation, humility in prosperity, perseverance unto the end. Help me, God, in all my necessities and difficulties, and from my tribulation and anguish into joy and everlasting rejoicing. And when the last day of my life shall come, deliver me from the

PRAYERS FOR VARIOUS STATES OF

LIFE.

For the Master of a Housebold.

UNTO Thee, O Lord,

trusting in Thy mercy and lovingkindness, I commend this day my body and soul, my thoughts, words and deeds, my going out and coming in, my life and my death, [my wife, children, friends, servants, my goods and possessions, my home], and all that Thy bounty has given me. Into Thy care this day and evermore I give myself and

mine entirely; for without Thee, O God, I know that we can do nothing. Do Thou, O God, this day and evermore watch over this household, look down upon me and those who live with me, and guide us all in the way that is pleasing unto Thee. Preserve us from doing aught in thought, word, or deed against Thy will, and grant us so to live this day, that we may both now and to all eternity confess Thy honour, Thy praises, Thy bounty, and Thy mercy.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD, my God, Thou

Το

hast given me body, soul, and strength, and at Thy hands have I received whatever I am or have. Do Thou, therefore, dispose of all my goods, my home, my business, my condition, my deeds, and my life according to Thy will, to Thy praise, and to the use and benefit of all mankind. In Thee is my hope; in Thee is my confidence; in Thee I entirely trust, knowing that Thou wilt not desert me. Thy care I commend my all, my wife, my children, my servants. Keep us, O Lord, from sin, from shame, from fire, from storm, and from all evil. Let Thy holy angels be with us and lead us in the right way, that we offend Thee not by thought, word or deed; but living according to Thy will, may praise and glorify Thee to all eternity. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

dominion over the creatures which Thou hast made, and hast ordered the world in righteousness; I know, O God, that my condition is not that of command but of responsibility, and that Thou hast committed unto me Thine own chosen children, joined to Thee by a bond of love, for whom Thou didst not hesitate even to die. Thou hearest, O God, in whatsoever pain they cry unto Thee; grant me, therefore, so to do my duty, that no occasion may be found for accusing me before Thy tribunal. Who am I, O God, that I should duly perform so great a duty? How can I, who am but a man, weak and full of imperfections, liable to err and to be deceived, avoid unjustly favouritism, or be ever at my place in the service of all? O God, I humbly pray Thee; to send me wisdom from the holy heavens and from the place of Thy Throne, to be with me and to labour with me, that I may understand and know what is pleasing unto Thee. Pour into my heart Thy fear, that I may never out of affection or dislike do anything except in accordance with justice and truth. Lighten my heart and my understanding, that all that is just in Thy
