soul the gift of Thy love, that, despising these transitory things, I may pass on with continued longing to those things which are eternal.

Holy Trinity, One God, defend me this day from every attack of the Devil. Keep me from every sin; protect me from a sudden and unprovided death. Be my consolation in trouble, my defence in temptation, and the sweet refuge of my soul in death, [*As Thou hast raised up my body buried in sleep, so I pray Thee likewise to raise up my soul from the sleep of sin and darkness of this world; as Thou hast recalled my body from sleep, so recall it hereafter from death to life, for death is but as a sleep with Thee.] To Thee be blessing and glory, and wisdom and thanksgiving, honour, might, and dominion, for ever and ever. Amen.

SWEET JESU, give me

that treasure which is Thyself, and let me be poor in everything else. Make me

adorable, glorious, fearful, almighty, eternal God! O Lover of me! O Friend of the faithful, when shall I love Thee in return for Thy love? When shall I renounce myself, and give myself wholly to Thee? Would that I could deny myself, and be spent wholly for Thee. Stir up my heart, O God, that I may seek Thee; enlighten my heart that I may find Thee make my heart Thine, that I may rejoice in Thee, and forget all things beside Thee: Who livest and reignest God, world without end.

The Holy Angels. GOD, Who of Thine unspeakable providence hast appointed Thy holy angels to be our guardians and protectors, mercifully grant that we may ever be defended by Thy power, and hereafter be partakers in their everlasting felicity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

as weak to the Mighty One, needy to the Great Benefactor, a child to its Father. Name of Jesus I pray for all which can forward my sanctification and true prosperity. Enrich me with what I need; give me what is good and beneficial for me; lead me as Thou wilt, and be this day and ever my God, Who helpeth me, my Shepherd in Whom I trust, the Guiding Light of all my ways.

God the Father, may Thy wisdom govern me; Thy grace uphold me; Thy love comfort me; Thy favour and tender mercy assure me; Thy righteousness strengthen me; Thy Almighty power protect me.

O Son of God! may Thy Incarnation be the pillar and ground of my faith; Thy holy law my instruction; Thy conduct my example; Thy humility my pattern; Thy patience my strength; Thy innocence my healing; Thy obedience my justification; Thy suffering my deliverance; Thy Cross my honour; Thy Death my life; Thy Resurrection and Ascension my hope; Thy judgment the beginning of my everlasting happiness. May Thy sacred Passion, Jesu, strengthen me; Thy holy death, O Jesu, deliver me; Thy wisdom, O Jesu, teach

me; Thy righteousness, O Jesu, sanctify me; Thy patience, O Jesu, encourage me; Thy gentleness, O lesu, refresh me; Thy goodness, O Jesu, give me eternal life.

O Holy Ghost, lighten my understanding; sanctify my will; support me in the conflict with my passions, and strengthen me in all good, that I may know the truth, and may hate and deplore my sins; that I may never postpone amendment; that I may give myself up entirely to virtue, and never trifle with my everlasting happiness. Make my heart ready, O God, for all goodness, joyful in hope, stedfast in faith, and rooted in charity; perfect in obedience, and intent after the things which are in heaven.

Grant me to be pure in thought, true in word, edifying in conversation, modest in my actions, temperate in pleasures, patient in trouble, upright in word and deed, sensible in all things.

Give me understanding, O God, to confess Thee, Thy holy will, and Thy counsel, to think and to speak wisely, to walk prudently, to distinguish between good and evil, and to judge reasonably.

Above all make Thy love

to

to grow in me, and make me just, to render to my neighbour his due, to give him what belongs to him, leave alone what is his concern, and gladly to see him enjoy what Thy providence has given him.

Make me gentle, O God, with meekness and benevolence, that I may assist the deserted, counsel the wandering, teach the ignorant, plead for the weak, help the poor, strengthen the feeble, lift up the fallen, deliver the oppressed, and do all men as much good as I can. Grant me to be easily appeased, and to love my enemies; to bless them that curse me; to do well to them that hate me; to pray for them that despitefully use me; to spare those whom I could injure, and to return them good for evil.

Instil into me reverence for my ecclesiastical and civil superiors; peaceableness with my family and fellow-townsmen ; modesty and respect towards old age; condescension towards those beneath me; readiness to oblige every one. Suffer me to take a heartfelt part in the sorrows of my neighbour; to live in peace with all; above all to maintain peace and to further the prosperity of all with all my strength. Keep

me from dangerous company; let me be circumspect and watchful everywhere, that I may avoid those who would lead me astray, and cleave to those that are good; following their example, and myself setting a good example fo others. Let me so live that I may honour my holy religion by my manner of life, win men to holiness, and, so far as in me lies, further the kingdom of Christ upon earth. Give me, O Loving Father, of Thy Divine blessing what l'hy goodness and wisdom judge best for me. Grant me, as long as I live, a sound understanding; a heart quiet and free from reproach, and as much strength as is necessary for a laborious life. Prolong my days, if it be Thy will, until I have by good works made myself meet for everlasting life.

Bless my food, my labour, and my calling, that I may earn so much as I need to provide for myself and mine, to avoid indigence, to help my neighbour, to help the poor, and to give to Thy service. Make my neighbour inclined to love and kindness towards me, that I may find counsel when I need counsel, help when I need help, protection when I need protection.

pray Thee not to deliver me from all sorrow, but to give me patience when I suffer, humility when I am despised, meekness when I am injured, contentment if Thou wilt not remove my trouble. Grant me to put aside all vain grief, and never to resist Thy holy will, but to submit myself with childlike obedience, and to learn those virtues which it is Thine intention that trouble should teach me. Grant me trust in Thee, self-abnegation, and renunciation of the world. Finally, when I am sick, be Thou my Physician; when I am in pain, soothe me; when my strength fails in sickness, heal me; or if it be Thy will that I should not recover, grant me to be made ready and prepared for my end by the Holy Sacraments, and by the submission of my will to Thy decree; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

II.

MOST glorious Jesu, how beautiful, how lovely, how sweet art Thou! blessed are all they that love Thee. O most loving Lord, the only treasure, the only joy of my heart, grant me entirely to renounce myself, and with the most ardent desire to seek after

Thee. O True Light! O Eternal Life! O Love ever burning! grant me to die entirely to the world and the flesh, and to forget all transitory things; that I may neither grieve about them nor rejoice, nor feel anything except Thy love. O most high, most powerful, most beautiful, most glorious, most sweet, most merciful, most loving, most adorable Lord, make me a heart like Thy heart, and abide with me for ever. Take me for Thine,

and make me Thine. Bind me to Thee with an indissoluble chain of love, that neither death nor life may ever part us. O Lord Jesu, make me to know my worthlessness and Thy Majesty and Goodness, that thence I may learn a most profound humility, and from humility a most perfect charity. O most merciful Jesu, forasmuch as Thou commandest this one thing, and I desire the same, to love Thee with all my heart, and to please Thee in everything and above all; why, alas! is not this brought to pass in me. I can desire nothing good, much less do anything that is good, except Thy grace inspire the thought and assist me to the work. What Thou hast taught me to desire, what Thou commandest,

what Thou praisest, grant me to desire and to accomplish. Most merciful Jesu, I implore Thee, deny me not what Thou commandest, which is most pleasing to Thee, and most desired by me. Fill my heart with a most perfect, most ardent, most faithful, most unfailing love; that whatsoever I am, or have, or can do, whatsoever is within me or about me, may worship Thee, seek Thee, desire Thee, love Thee, serve Thee, and please Thee for ever and most perfectly; Who livest and reignest God, world without end. Amen.

The Saints.

MOST gracious God, the

Author of all sanctity, and Lover of Unity, Whose wisdom hath established a wonderful communion between Thy Church Triumphant in Heaven and Militant on earth, as members of the same mystical body, whereof Thy Son Christ Jesus is the Head: Mercifully grant that as Thy blessed Saints without ceasing praise Thee in Heaven, so we may continually serve Thee on earth, having their holy examples in remembrance, and being partakers

of their perfect charity, till we all meet before Thy glorious Throne, and with one heart adore Thee, the Saviour of us all: Who with Thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth ever one God, world without end. Amen.

SON of God, Word of

the Father, Jesus Christ Lord and Master, this day Thou didst in the evening rise up from supper and with great humility wash the feet of Thy disciples, and even of the traitor, and on the same evening didst give them Thy Holy Body and Blood, having taken the bread and wine in Thy sacred hands, and didst communicate them, saying, Take, eat; this is My Body and My Blood, given for you and for many for the remission of sins: On this day Thou didst ascend into Heaven, and satest down on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, to reign as His beloved Son for ever and ever. Wherefore I implore, by these sacred mysteries, wrought this day, to grant all sinners living and departed the pardon of all their transgressions, and to give me warm tears of con
