Turn Thee, O Lord, and de

liver my soul: O save me for Thy mercies' sake. My God, I believe in Thy perfect truth: I hope in Thine infinite mercy: I love Thy boundless goodness. Lord Jesu, live and let it be My life to die for love of Thee.

My God, let me never be

separated from Thee: let me desire nothing but Thee.

Most sweet Jesu, let me never be separated from Thee.

I pray Thee, help Thy servant: whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious Blood. Eternal God, I hope and desire to love Thee for ever.

RESIGN my spirit, O God, most cheerfully into Thy hands, hoping to find mercy with Thee through Christ Jesus. I know no other name under heaven whereby I may be saved but Thine alone, Ó Blessed Jesus; Who wast dead, and art alive again, and livest for evermore. I come unto Thee, O Lord, confiding in Thy most precious promises (which I believe are faithful and true as Thou art) for pardon and for immortal life. Accept, I beseech Thee, of my most hearty thanks, for all Thy mercies to me, from the beginning of my life to this moment. Pass by all my ingratitude and disobedience. Receive me into the company of the spirits of just men made perfect, to give Thee thanks for ever.

And as I desire to find mercy with Thee, so I forgive all my enemies; beseeching Thee likewise to forgive them; and to bless and comfort all my friends, and to make Thy whole Church glorious; and to bring us all at last to live

together in everlasting love and joy; through Christ Jesus. Amen.

For a Happy Death.

LORD JESU CHRIST, Who hast saved all, and willest not that one soul should perish Thou Who refusest hope and mercy to none, but hast said, "Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My Name, it shall be given you,' I pray Thee, by Thy holy Name of Saviour, grant me at my last hour a clear understanding, and the power of speech, deep contrition of heart for all my sins, a true faith, confident hope, and perfect love that I may be able to say to Thee with all my heart, "Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit," Who art praised and glorified for ever and ever.

WHE

Amen.

HEN I shall not be able to pray for myself, good Lord, favourably hear the prayer of Thy Church for me. Grant that the sins which I have committed in this world may not be imputed unto me; but that, escaping the gates of hell, I may dwell in the regions of light, with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, until the day of the

general resurrection, and that then I may hear the joyful words of Thy Son, Come, ye blessed of my Father; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

JESU, Who hadst compassion upon the thief even at the hour of death, have mercy upon me, who now repent of my misdoings. Suffer not the gates of Paradise to be shut against me when I die, Thou Who hast opened the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers. Restore my soul at the great day to life eternal. Give me the patience of Job, the faith of Abraham, the courage of Peter, the comfort of Paul, and a true submission to Thy will. Apply to my soul all the wholesome medicines of Thy Son's Passion, Death, and Resurrection, against the powers of Satan, against all unreasonable fears and despair, and ease my careful conscience. Hear the prayers of Thy Church for me, and for all in my condition; for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

ACCEPT of death, O God,

in union with the sacrifice of my Saviour, and in whatever manner I am to suffer this sentence of death, justly

passed upon me and all mankind.

O Thou Who hast overcome the sharpness of death, and hast opened the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers, increase my faith now, and at the hour of death let it be perfect and unshaken.

Archbishop Laud's Prayers at the Block.

ETERNAL God, and

merciful Father, look down upon me in mercy, in the riches and fulness of all Thy mercies. Look upon me, but not till Thou hast nailed my sins to the Cross of Christ, not till Thou hast bathed me in the Blood of Christ, not till I have hid myself in the wounds of Christ; that so the punishment due unto my sins may pass over me. And since Thou art pleased to try me to the uttermost, I most humbly beseech Thee, give me now, in this great instant, full patience, proportionable comfort, and a heart ready to die for Thine honour.* My sins are many and great; Lord, pardon them all, and those especially

....

(whatever they are) which have drawn down this present judgment upon me. And when Thou hast given me strength to bear it, do with me as seems best in Thine eyes. Amen.

LORD, I am coming as fast

as I can. I know I must pass through the shadow of death before I can come to see Thee. But this is but umbra mortis, a mere shadow of death, a little darkness upon nature; but Thou, by Thy merits and Passion hast broke through the jaws of death. So, Lord, receive my soul; have mercy upon me.

At Death.

LORD, with Whom do

live the spirits of them that die, and by Whom the souls of Thy servants, after They be delivered from the burden of this flesh, be in perpetual joy and felicity. We moet meekly beseech Thee for this Thy servant, that, having now received the absolution from all his sins which he hath committed in this world, he

may escape the gates of hell, and the pains of eternal darkness; that he may for ever dwell with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in the region of light, and in Thy blessed Presence, where there is neither weeping nor heaviness; and that when the dreadful day of the general judgment shall come, he may rise again with the just, and receive this dead body which must now be buried in the earth to be joined with his soul, and be made pure and incorruptible for ever after in Thy glorious Kingdom, for the merits of Thy dear Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Intercession for the Sick. WE prostrate ourselves be

fore Thee, O Lord of Heaven and earth, acknowledging that we are but dust and ashes at the best, and have made ourselves sinful dust and ashes, utterly unworthy to speak unto Thee, either for ourselves or for others. We most humbly and earnestly beg Thy gracious pardon, and beseech Thee, for Jesus Christ's sake, to accept of our unfeigned sorrow for what is past, and of our sincere purposes, by Thy gracious assistance (which we

know Thou wilt not deny us), to live more soberly, righteously, and godly for the time

to come.

More particularly we implore Thy grace and favour towards this Thy sick servant, in whom we see how weak and frail we all are. Work in him a true and hearty repentance for all the sins be hath committed, in thought, word, or deed, against Thy Divine Majesty. Give him a lively and stedfast faith in Thy Son Jesus Christ, Who died for our offences, and was raised again for our justificaFill him with a reviving hope of that immortal life which He hath purchased and promised, and with a powerful sense of Thy Fatherly love to him, and tender care over him, in this most afflicted condition. Let him feel Thou lovest him, by Thy heavenly supports and comforts vouchsafed to him from above, and by bestowing on him perfect patience and absolute submission to Thee during this sickness.

ALMGHTY and most mer

God, we recommend this Thy sick servant to Thy infinite and most compassionate mercy. Settle in his soul a stedfast faith, that

ne

Thou dost not willingly grieve the children of men, but intendest good to him by this affliction; and now that other pleasures and enjoyments fail him, represent Thyself effectually unto him, as his true happiness and satisfaction. Whereinsoever he hath glected Thee,or committed any offence against Thee, make him deeply sensible of, and heartily sorrowful for, his folly; and as he earnestly desires pardon and forgiveness of Thee, so work in him a serious resolution to live more circumspectly and exactly in time to come. Assist him graciously, O Lord, that be may give a proof of his sincere intentions hereafter to submit himself in all things to Thy will, by his patient submission to Thy fatherly correction now. O that he may so quietly, so meekly, so humbly and cheer. fully resign his will unto Thee to suffer what Thou inflictest, that he may be the more disposed readily to deny bis own desires, in doing whatsoever Thou commandest; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ALMIGHTY GOD, to Whom alone belong the issues of life and death, look

down from heaven, I most humbly beseech Thee, upon all those now visited with sickness. Visit them, O Lord, with Thy salvation; deliver them in Thy good appointed time from their bodily pain; save their souls for Thy mercies' sake: that if it be Thy good pleasure to prolong their days, they may live to Thee and to Thy glory, by doing good in their generation; or else receive them into the mansions of the blessed; for the sake of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

ALMIGHTY Everlasting

God, the eternal salvation of the faithful, hear our prayers for thy servant N., who is sick, on whose behalf we call upon Thy mercy, that Thou wouldest restore him to health, that he may give thanks unto Thee in Thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GOD of heavenly powers, Who dost by Thy mighty Word dispel all sickness and all weakness, show mercy upon Thy servant N., that his sickness being cured and his health restored, he may bless Thy Holy Name for his recovery;
