The soldiers took His garments, and made four parts; to every soldier a part; and also His coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said, therefore, let us not rend it, but cast lots for it whose it shall be that the scripture might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

Ant.-Christ hath redeemed us from the curse, being made a curse for us for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit, through faith.

Jesus dies on the Cross.

When Jesus had cried with a loud voice, He said, Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit: and, having said

this, He bowed His head, and gave up the ghost.

God dies! and for you! Think how He died, and how you will die.

Ant. We see Jesus, Who was made a little lower than the Angels, for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour, that He, by the grace of God, should taste of death for every man. For it became Him, for Whom are all things, and by Whom are all things, in bringing many Sous unto glory, to make the Captain of their salvation perfect through suffering; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, and deliver them who, through fear of death, were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

When the soldiers came to Jesus, and saw that He was dead already, they brake not His legs; but one of the soldiers, with a spear, pierced His side, and forthwith came thereout blood and And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of Him shall not be broken. And again another Scripture saith, They shall look on Him Whom they pierced.

His wounds are the founts of wisdom, mercy, grace, ghostly comfort, and everlasting life.

Jesus is taken down from the Cross.

Joseph, of Arimathea, besought Pilate that he might take the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came, therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

GRANT, O Lord, that as

we are baptized into the death of Thy blessed Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, so by continually mortifying our corrupt affections, we may be buried with Him: that

through the grave and gate of death, we may pass to our joyful resurrection: for His merits Who died, and was buried, and rose again for us,

LORD JESU CHRIST,

Who hast sought out the lost, brought back the wanderers, given life to the dead; Who alone, for the salvation of those who were taken captive, didst take upon Thee mortal flesh free from sin, and free from sin didst bear it, lay it down, and take it again: Who by the right of Thy nature, glory, justice, and power, didst as God live, die, and rise again for us in a body like ours, we pray Thee with all the devotion of our hearts and souls to take away all that clouds our vision, that we may behold the wonderful things of Thy law, and to purge our souls that we may be able to see the things which Thou hast commanded us to do. Reveal Thyself to our souls, Who art no longer visible to our eyes. Dwell in us, Thou Whom the heaven of heavens cannot contain: that our souls being quickened by Thy doctrine and by Thy presence, we may lack neither knowledge nor salvation. Grant this, O

risen Lord, Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

CONQUEROR of Earth and Hell, Who by Thy death hast destroyed Death, and by Thy precious Blood hast expiated the sins of all mankind: what shall I offer Thee in return for all Thou hast given unto me. All the little that I have I offer unto Thee my soul, that Thou mayest make Thy temple therein; my heart, that it may love Thee; my body, that it may serve Thee. Make me, O Saviour, to be a partaker of that incomparable treasure of redemption which Thou hast won for me. Open me the treasury of Thy merits, pay all my debt. Make me such in this world as Thou wouldest have me to be in the world to come, where Thou livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

LORD, our Redeemer and Creator, Whose flesh saw not corruption in the tomb, but rose again glorified by the power of God the Father: mercifully destroy all carnal corruptions in us, and gird us with the glorious girdle of purity, that having over
