me! How well hast Thou fought for me! Lord, I pray Thee to grant me remission of my sins, true contrition and repentance, and grace not to offend Thee for the future, neither by those sins of which I have been heretofore guilty, nor by any others. I pray especially for Thy grace to bridle my flesh, to rule my tongue, to mortify my inordinate appetites, to collect my scattered and wandering thoughts and imaginations; That, being thus renewed, may become a new creature, a living temple, a dwelling-place acceptable to Thee.

Give me

also those virtues which should adorn the place of Thy rest; a holy fear of Thy Name; firm hope, profound humility, perfect patience, prudent discernment, poverty of spirit, entire obedience, long suffering fortitude, and diligent readiness in all things which pertain to Thy honour and worship, and, above all things, ardent love of Thee and of my neighbour. And since I am unworthy of all these things, I pray Thee, O Lord, to call to remembrance Thy tender mercies and Thy loving kindnesses which have been ever of old; remember that Thou desirest not the death of a sinner,

will call upon Thee: for Thou ⚫ hearest me.

Among the gods there is none like unto Thee, O Lord: there is not one that can do as Thou doest.

All nations whom Thou hast made shall come and worship Thee, O Lord: and shall glorify Thy Name.

For Thou art great, and doest wondrous things: Thou art God alone.

Teach me Thy way, O Lord, and I will walk in Thy truth: O knit my heart unto Thee, that I may fear Thy Name.

I will thank Thee, O Lord my God, with all heart: my

and will praise Thy Name for

evermore.

For great is Thy mercy toward me and Thou hast delivered my soul from the nethermost hell.

O God, the proud are risen against me and the congregations of naughty men have sought after my soul, and have not set Thee before their eyes.

But Thou, O Lord God, art full of compassion and mercy: long-suffering, plenteous in goodness and truth.

O turn Thee then unto me, and have mercy upon me: give Thy strength unto Thy ser

vant, and help the son of Thine handmaid.

Show some token upon me for good, that they who hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because Thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted

me.

ing God, Father, all merciful and ever ready to forgive, to Thee 1 confess my perversity, and the wickedness of my deeds. My sins are many, and the burden of them is great and heavy, I have sinned in thought, word, and deed, not only against my neighbour, whom Thou has bidden me to love even as myself, but. also against Thee, O my God, my most bountiful Father, I have provoked Thy wrath, and merited Thine anger. The Evil One suggested, and my own concupiscence consented, and ruined me, I have none to blame but myself, O God; therefore I both accuse myself and condemn myself, because I have myself done that which is evil. Yet, O most merciful Father, am I not Thine? Hast not Thou, O God, given Thy Son to be the propitiation for my sins? Spare me, and mercifully forgive the offences of one who acknowledges his

faults. Deal with me not according to my sins, but accord-. ing to Thy mercy. For as much as I can make no atonement, do Thou do away with

my sins. Punish me now, O God, rather than suffer me to die in sin, and to be punished eternally. Thou art true, and despisest none who fly to Thee. Have mercy upon me, and wash away my sins in the Blood of Jesus Christ our Saviour; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

the helpless, hear the prayers of Thy servant. Be merciful, O Lord; bow down the ears of Thy mercy, and of Thine ineffable goodness blot out what my wickedness has committed. Grant me Thy consolation, O most merciful Lord, that I may rest in Thee. Raise me up from my sins. Fill my heart with Thy love, that I may desire to love Thee with all my mind and with all my strength. Thou only, O Lord, knowest the wounds of my conscience, and my secret impurity: my inmost thoughts are not hid from Thee. Have

mercy upon me, O Lord, have mercy upon me, for Thou art the Physician of my soul.

Take away from me all uncleanness and impurity of mind and body. Break Thou the power of my evil and malicious enemy. Pardon my past faults, grant me to refrain from present sin, and give me for the future prudence, and a life pleasing unto Thee; Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

To Thee, O Lord, I con

fess, from the depth of my heart, and with all my soul, that I am the greatest of sinners and yet that nevertheless I do put my whole trust in Thy mercy. Though my sins are many, Thy mercies are without number. most merciful Father, if Thou wilt Thou canst make me clean. Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed, for I confess that I have sinned against Thee. Remember Thy promise, "Return unto me and I will receive Thee," relying upon which, O most merciful Father, I turn unto Thee with all my heart, and pray Thee not to remember my sins and offences, but to pardon them all, for the merits and sufferings of Thine Only-begotten Son our Lord, Who endured all for us and Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the

WOE is me, that I have

sinned against Thee, O Lord; I have sinned against Thee, and erred from the right way. Behoid, I am ashamed, and desire to turn away from my iniquities: O God, I repent, and with my whole heart turn to Thee and seek Thy face, and implore Thee to have mercy, for I have sinned, and done unjustly, and wrought

amiss. Hear, O God, from heaven Thy dwelling-place, and have respect unto the prayer of Thy servant, and to his supplication, and be merciful unto me, and save my soul. I dare not lift up my eyes to heaven, but, standing afar off, I strike upon my breast, saying with the publican, God be merciful to me a sinner: be merciful to me who have sinned more than the publican : through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I HAVE sinned, O Lord, I

have sinned, and I acknowledge my sins, and humbly pray Thee to pardon me: and not to destroy me with mine iniquities. Doom me not in Thine anger to everlasting woe,

for Thou art God, the God of penitents, and showest all Thy goodness towards me: for Thou shalt save me, unworthy as I am, according to the multitude of Thy mercies: and therefore will I praise Thee evermore: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

After a Great Sin. GOD, what have I done? I have sinned against Thee; I have offended Thee, my highest good: I am unworthy to look up to heaven : I am not worthy, O Jesu, to utter Thy Name. Yet I come unto Thee, O my crucified Saviour: I pray Thee, by Thy sacred wounds, by Thy pierced heart, to be my refuge, and to wash my poor soul from its shameful sins in Thine allcleansing Blood, Be merciful, O Jesu. I grieve with all my heart that I have sinned against Thee, my Master, my Saviour, my God, my highest and greatest Good. O God, I renounce, and hope to put away this sin, and my other sins. I will confess it--and amend-and by Thy grace never commit it again. I pray Thee, O Jesu, by Thy endless mercy, to pity me, to forgive me this fault, to cleanse me; and to give me grace to live

more perfectly. Have mercy upon me, who deserve no mercy, O all-merciful Saviour; Who livest and reignest God, world without end. Amen.

After a Relapse. MERCY, mercy, I most

suppliant, who have so often gone astray from Thee by sin. Whither can I turn save unto Thee? If Thou reject me, who will receive me? If Thou condemn me, from whom can I hope for pardon? Often indeed, ere now, have I determined to keep Thy statutes and to avoid sin especially...]. But, alas, I have been again found wanting, and, seduced by my desires, I have left Thee and have sinned. O God, what shall I do? whither can I fly, save unto Thee? in Whom is all my salvation, my

earnestly beg, O Father of mercies, for the sake of Him that died for me, not merely for the pardon of my sins, but for a Divine power to enable me to subdue them. I desire not Thine infinite goodness to bear me out in rebellion against Thy righteousness, purity, and truth, but that by Thy good-life, my resurrection. ness I may be partaker of them; that my repentance may be accepted; and that it may be hearty and stedfast, never to be repented of. I desire not peace, quiet, and ease, but strength constantly and resolutely to oppose all the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil; and through Thy gracious assistance to be victorious; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
