in us, by us, and upon us. Amen.

NOT unto us, O Lord, not

MIDDAY PRAYERS.

LORD, have mercy.

OUR FATHER.

LORD, let Thy mercy lighten upon us, and the brightness of Thy Spirit illumine our inward parts, that He may enflame the lukewarm, and lighten the ignorant, Who ever abideth with Thee all splendid and all glorious.

GOD, I believe in Thee,

for Thou art the Truth, I adore Thy supreme and uncreated Being; I hope in Thy immense mercy; I love Thy infinite goodness. I am confused and ashamed, that not

I.

contented with Thee, the supreme good, I have sought inferior and unreal things. I grieve for my sins, for by them I have offended Thee Whom I should love above all else; desiring to do better I purpose a full and perfect amendment. I thank Thee for all the benefits Thou continuest to pour upon me. Whatsoever I am or possess offer to Thee to be governed according to Thy will. I entirely pardon all who have offended me; and I pray Thee, by the Passion of Thy Son, to have mercy upon my soul at Thy coming, and to receive it fortified by the Holy Sacraments into ever lasting life. Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD JESUS CHRIST,

Which art the True Sun of the world, evermore arising and never going down, which by Thy most wholesome appearing and sight, does bring forth and preserve, nourish and refresh all things, as well that are in Heaven, as also that are on earth: We be seech Thee mercifully and favourably to shine in our hearts, that the night and darkness of sins, and the mists of errors on every side being driven away, Thou brightly shining within our hearts, we may all our lifespace go on without stumbling or offence, and may decently and seemly walk (as in the daytime) being pure and clean from the works of darkness, and abounding in all good works which God hath prepared for us to walk in: Which with the Father and with the Holy Ghost livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.

LORD and Father, I am

not worthy of the least of all the mercies which Thou hast showed Thy servant, neither can I render due thanks and praise for them; but Thou, O Lord, accept of this my sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, on behalf of myself and all that belong to me.

Midday Examination.

Those who say midday prayers will find it very beneficial to add a midday self-examination: either with regard to the sins committed since awaking, or with a special view to examine the manner in which their work is done; inquiring into the motives, the causes, the imperfections, the insufficiency of their actions, the spirit in which they have been done, the complacency, regret, with which they regard them, etc.

AT THE CURFEW.

adore Thee, and by Thy most bitter death and passion pray Thee, the All-merciful, to look upon me when I come to the hour of my death. Come Thou then to me, O God, and receive my soul leaving this body. Grant me to be led to the place of the blessed by the hands of thy ministering spirits. Whether I live or die I am Thine. Deny not life to Thy creature for whom Thou hast borne the pains of death: Who livest and reignest God, world without end. Amen.

our hearts from every stain, and save our souls, Good Spirit.

Have mercy upon us, O God, have mercy upon us, and mercifully wash away the multitude of our sins; and whatever through the temptation of the enemy we have this day done amiss by thought, word, or deed, do Thou Who art kind and pitiful mercifully pardon.

Have mercy, O God; have mercy upon us; against Thee

ments. Sanctify our souls, purify our bodies, direct our thoughts, cleanse our consciences, and deliver us from all tribulation of pain and evil. Encompass us with Thy Holy Angels, that being protected and guided under their care, we may attain to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of Thine unap proachable glory, Who art blessed for ever and ever. Amen.

GOD, now that I am weary grant me rest, and renew my failing strength; lighten mine eyes that I sleep not in death; deliver me from the terror of night, from the pestilence that walketh in darkness. Grant me a healthy sleep, and to pass this night without fear. O Thou, Who keepest Israel, Who neither slumberest nor sleepest, keep me from all evil through this night. Keep my soul, O Lord, visit me with the visitation of Thy holy ones, enlighten mine eyes in the night visions; or if not this (which, O God, I in truth do not deserve), let my sleep be a repose not only from labour but from sin. Grant me a quiet sleep, O Thou Who knowest
