munion.

My God and Saviour! this day didst Thou give me grace first to be fed from Thy Holy Table with Thy most precious Body and Blood. I thank Thee, therefore, and evermore will thank Thee, for the sacred moment when Thou didst enter my heart, to bless me and enrich me with the treasure of Thy grace and love. How good Thou art, O Lord, and how graciously

O God, for my weakness after all Thy goodness, I come to Thee in sorrow and shame. Uphold me, O God, or I shall fall defend me, or I shall fail in the battle with sin. Let me never be parted from Thy love. Perfect Thy work and sanctify me more and more. Make me more worthy to receive Thee. Give me watchfulness in all things, that I may not lose Thy grace, and may be found fit also to receive an increase of grace in each of my Communions. Nourish and strengthen me often during my life with Thy Flesh and Blood, that I may be able to press forward on the way of salvation; nourish and strengthen me at the end of my life, with that sacred food of my soul, that I may die in Thy grace, and attain to everlasting life; through Thee, Who livest and reignest God, world without end. Amen.

SELF-EXAMINATION.

Prayer before Self-Examina

tion.

MOST merciful Father,

in addition to the innumerable benefits which Thou hast already conferred upon me, grant me this also, to know the sins I have committed against Thee. Lighten the darkness of my mind by the brightness of Thy light, strengthen my will, and assist my understanding, that I may know what evil I have done against Thee, and against my neighbour, by thought, word, and deed: Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

II. Show me my sins, O God, teach me how often I have offended against Thee.

Here make your Self-Examination.

III. Behold, O Lord, what I have given unto Thee, nothing but sin, neglect, and ingratitude, in return for all that Thou hast done unto me. I do indeed grieve that I have offended Thee, O God, my highest good, Whom I should love above aught else. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in Thy sight. I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost; look upon me and have mercy upon me. Pardon, O God, pardon me, for the sake of the tears, the Passion, and the Death of Thine Onlybegotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

IV. Behold, O Jesu, in Thee is all my hope. I humbly pray Thee to wash away all my sins and offences with Thy most sacred Blood, and to atone for my misdeeds by Thine infinite merits, for

Thou art the propitiation for |

our sins.

V. Shall I sin again, O Jesus? and again spurn Thy wounds, and Thy precious Blood shed for me? I am ashamed to raise my eyes to

your resolution in your own strength.

Ask help, generally, and in each particular: Through Christ our Lord.

Thee, for I am unworthy to LORD, I believe, help Thou

live. And yet shall I sin again, and again offend Thee.

Shall I again commit the sin of ...

Shall I again prefer to Thee.

Shall I again seek opportunities of .

O Lord, stretch forth Thy hand and help me, help me to conquer my sins. Strengthen, O God, that Thou hast wrought in me, for Thy Name's sake. Amen.

Having finished youc Examination, you may add the following Devotion.

An Act of Contrition, with immediate reference to your sin.

A suitable prayer for Pardon. A resolution of amendment in certain particulars: when .: how .: where

.: by what means? Confess your own infirmity, and the impossibility of your being able to carry out

mine unbelief. Strengthen my weak faith: for what is my hope? truly my hope is even in Thee. Open mine eyes that I may see. Incline my heart that I may love, and direct my feet that I may walk in the path of Thy commandments: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thanksgiving after SelfExamination for preservation from worse sins.

[ocr errors]

MOST merciful God, I

thank Thee for that in spite of my great negligence I have not fallen into yet greater sins than these: and that through Thy mercy I have not died in this miserable condition. And as I have been hitherto ungrateful, so I do now determine to amend, and during the rest of my life to show forth, by my actions, my gratitude to Thee, my Lord and my God: through Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord. Amen.

Method for a Steady Im. provement in Life.

1. Make every morning a firm resolution to commit no mortal sin, and no wilful venial sin, particularly that venial sin to which you are most inclined. 2. Shun all opportunities of sin.

3. Stir up within yourself frequently a full repentance and contrition, but especially during times of temptation.

4. Think frequently of the last day.

5. Walk in the presence of God; remember that He is always with you, and sees all things.

6. Bear always a great love to Jesus glorified.

7. Receive regularly and frequently the most holy Sacrament: this is the most powerful method of all.
