NOTICES OF BOOKS.

By W. M. London:

Qualitative and Volumetric Analysis. HOOTON, M.A. (Oxon.), M.Sc., F.I.C. Edward Arnold. 1915. THIS book gives first an ordinary course of work in qualitative analysis, beginning with dry tests, then passing on to the metals in solution and the acid radicles, and finally giving separation tables. Although the directions are concise and the matter is well arranged there appears to be no particular novelty in the treatment. A good feature is the inclusion of the rarer metallic ions, such as tung. sten, vanadium, &c., which are of considerable technical importance, and the reactions of the less common acid radicles as well as some organic acids are also tabulated. The principles of volumetric analysis are clearly explained, and a good selection of examples and additional exercises is provided.

Quantitative Law in Biological Chemistry. By SVANTE ARRHENIUS, Ph.D., M.D., LL.D., F.R.S. London : G. Bell and Sons, Ltd. 1915.

THIS book is based upon three Tyndall Lectures, delivered by the author at the Royal Institution in May last year. It contains descriptions of the author's pioneering work on quantitative measurements in biochemitry, with discussions of the conclusions to be drawn from it and the experiments of other investigators in the same sphere. Velocity of Reactions, the Influence of Temperature on the Velocity of Reactions, Reactions of Cells, Quantitative Laws of Digestion and Resorption, Chemical Equilibria and Immunisation are the titles of the chapters, and the book may be said to treat of vitalism from the chemical standpoint and to discuss the applicability of the physico-chemical laws of general chemistry to biochemical processes. The methods and theories of physical chemistry are of very great importance for the develop. ment of an exact science of biochemisty, and this book contains an excellent summary of the work that has already been done, and should prove both interesting and stimulating to students of the science.

John Dalton's Lectures and Lecture Illustrations. Parts I. and II., by Prof. W. W. HALDANE GEE, B.Sc., M.Sc.Tech. Part III, by HUBERT FRANK COWARD, D.Sc., and ARTHUR HARDEN, D.Sc., Ph.D., F.R.S. Manchester 36, George Street. 1915. THESE extracts from the memoirs of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society contain descriptions of some diagrams made and used by John Dalton, which were found in a cupboard in the house of the Society. The diagrams, after they had been examined by experts, were cleaned and repaired, and this catalogue of them was prepared. In all they number about 150, and they were divided into two groups; firstly, those relating to Mechanics, Physics, Astronomy, and Meteorology, and secondly those dealing with the Atomic Theory. These latter, which are described in Part III. of the pamphlet, are particularly interesting. Short summaries of some of the lectures are included, prepared from lecture notes and syllabuses of courses of lectures, which were found among the Dalton manuscripts and miscellaneous packets of papers.

Churchill announce the publication of the following new books :"An Introduction to the Physics and Chemistry of Colloids," by Emil Hatschek; Second Edition, with 17 illustrations; price 38. net. PREPARATION OF SULPHURETTED HYDROGEN.

To the Editor of the Chemical News.

SIR,-The following description of a simple apparatus for the preparation of sulphuretted hydrogen and similar gases, which I devised after much trouble with Kipp's and other forms may be of use to your readers.

An efficient and easily cleaned apparatus for the preparation of sulphuretted hydrogen and similar gases may be made by using for the generating chamber a calcium chloride drying tower. In the constricted part near the bottom is placed a short piece of glass rod of nearly the same diameter and with a flattened head just large enough

to prevent it falling through. In the head channels are cut with a file or pressed while hot. This support permits the use of iron sulphide in small pieces, with which the tower is nearly filled. Acid is admitted through the tubulure, easily enters the generating chamber, and, meeting with a large surface of sulphide, quickly produces a copious current of gas, which, having very little space to fill in the tower, is at once available for use.-I am, &c., Chemical Laboratory, Leeds Forge, Leeds, October 31, 1915.
