26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: * that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is 1boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is "justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

29 "Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also : 30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31 P Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid : yea, we establish the law.

CHAP. IV.

1 Abraham's faith was imputed to him for righteousness, 10 before he was circumcised: 13 by faith only he and his seed received the promise: 16 Abraham is the father of all that believe: 24 our faith also shall be imputed to us for righteousness.

and circumcision is that of the heart, in the 'spirit, and not in the letter; whose "praise is not of men,15 but of God.

CHAP. III.

1 The Jews' prerogative: 3 which they have not lost: 9 howbeit the law convinceth them also of sin: 20 therefore no flesh is justified by the law, 28 but all, without difference, by faith only: 31 and yet the law is not abolished.

WHAT advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?

2 Much every way: chiefly, because that a unto them were committed the oracles of God.

CHAP. III.

Unto us was the Gospel preached, as well as unto them; but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

NUMB. Xxiii. 19: God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? 8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation 5 is just.

9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin ; 10 As it is written, 'There is none righteous, no, not one:

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Rom. v. 20: Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. do. vi. 1, 15: What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

'Ps. xiv. 1-3: The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. do. lin. 1: The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
