law, Gervafe Holles, Efq; (a worthy and authentick antiquary,) is ftiled, Protribunus Militum fub regimine Peregrini Berty, Militis. He had iffue, by Mary, his wife, daughter of Sir Francis Palmes, of Afhwell, in com. Rutland, Knt. three fons, Guy, Edward, and Robert, who all engaged, and bore arms in the fervice of his majefty King Charles I. Guy, the eldeft, went early into foreign parts, and ferved under Bernard, duke of Sax-Weymar, many years, and returned into his own country, by leave of the faid duke, juft before the breaking out of our civil wars. He arrived, anno 1639, and foon after entering himself in behalf of his fovereign, King Charles I. was captain-lieutenant to the general's company, the earl of Northumberland; was also lieutenant-colonel to prince Maurice's regiment of horse, anno 1642, and afterwards was colonel of the fame. He married, but left no iffuemale. Edward, his brother, was captain-lieutenant to Sir Charles Vavafor, A. D. 1640, as alfo captain of a foot-company in Ireland, anno 1642; afterwards, colonel of foot, and major-general, with Sir Richard Greenvill, but died without iflue-male.

Robert, the third fon, was engaged in the royal caufe throughout the civil war, and ferved under his brother, Guy. He married Judith, eldeft of the two daughters and coheirs, (that furvived of twenty-one children,) of John Byfle, Efq; chief-baron of the exchequer, in Ireland, (afterwards married to Sir William Tichborne, Kut.) by whom he had iffue, Robert Molefworth, of Brackens-town, in the county of Dublin, and of Edlington, in com. Ebor. Efq; Which Robert, at the revolution, diftinguished himself by an early and zealous appearance, in the defence of the rights and liberties of his country, and enjoyed no small share, in the efteem of King William, by whom he was fent envoy-extraordinary to the court of Denmark, anno 1692, and during his refidence there, made those useful remarks on tyrannical governments, which, on his return, he publifh'd in an account of that kingdom. He was afterwards elected fellow of the royal fociety, and fworn of the most honourable privy council of the kingdom of Ireland, and made one of the commiffioners of trade, 1 Geo. I. and by his late majefty K. George I. created lord viscount Molei. worth, of Swords, in the county of Dublin, in Ireland. And, by Lettice, his wife, third daughter of Richard Coot, baron of Coloney, in Ireland, he had feven fons, and three daughters, of which, the eldest was married to George Monk, Efq; CharlotteAmelia, fecond daughter, married captain William Tichburn, fecond fon to the lord Farrard; and, Letitia, the youngest, married Edward Bolton, of Brazile, in the county of Dublin, Efq; the fons were, 1. John; 2. Richard, of whom hereafter; 3. William, furveyor-general of the lands in Ireland, and member of parliament for Philip's-town, in that kingdom; 4. Edward; 5. F. R. S. and, 7. Biffe. John, his eldest son, the late lord viscount Molefworth, was fent by her majefty, envoy to the great duke of Tufcany, A. D. 1710, and made a commiffioner of the stampoffice; and 2 Geo. I. was made one of the commiffioners of trade and plantations, in the room of his father; and by his late majesty King George, was fent to the courts of Sardinia, Florence, Venice, and Switzerland; and married one of the daughters and coheirs of Thomas Middleton, of Stansted Mount Fitchet, in Effex, Efq; (by Elizabeth, his wife, daughter to Richard, lord Onflow,) by whom he had only a daughter, and died Feb. 17, 1726. Richard, fecond fon of Robert, lord viscount Molefworth, commanded a regiment in the army, and greatly diftinguished himself in Flanders. He mounted on his own horfe, the duke of Marlborough, at the battle of Ramellies, by which means, he rescued that great general from being taken prifoner, at the manifeft hazard of his own life. In 1714, he was made a lieutenantgeneral of the ordnance, in Ireland, and was a colonel of dragoons at the battle of Prefton, being alfo member of parliament for Swords; and in March, 1724-5, fucceeded general Whetham, in his regiment of foot, and fucceeded to the title and eftate, on the death of his brother, and is the prefent lord, and colonel of a regiment of horfe, in Ireland.

Having thus trac'd the elder line, I fhail now return to John, fourth fon of John Molefworth, of Helpíton, father of Anthony Molefworth, before treated of.

Which John, brother of Anthony, fettled at Pencarrow, in Cornwall, made a good addition to his fortune, by marriage with two wives; by the laft, Phillippa, daughter of Henry Rolle, of Heanton, in com. Devon, Efq; he had only two daughters; by the first, Catherine, eldeft daughter and coheir of John Hender, of Botreaux-caftle, in com. Cornub. Efq; he had iflue, two fons, and two daughters; Jane, married to William Rifden, of Vilefton, in com. Devon, Efq; and Elizabeth, the wife of John Tredenham, of Philly, in the county of Cornwall, Efq; mother of Sir Jofeph Tredenham, Knt. (who married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Edward Seymour, Bart.) Of the two fons, John, the youngest, embarking with the duke of Buckingham, in the expedition on the Ile of Rhee, was unhappily killed there; and, Hender, the eldeft, (aged twenty-three years, anno 1620,) taking in marriage, Mary, cldeft daughter of John Spark, of the Fryery, in Plimouth, Efq; had iffue, three fons, John, Hender, and Richard; the last died young.

Hender, was bred a merchant, and fettling in Jamaica, was prefident of the council of that ifland, in the reign of King Charles II. and upon the death of Sir Thomas Lynch, was nominated and chofen to act as governor, (according to the confti-. tution of the island,) till fuch time as a commiffion should come

from the court of England, appointing another to be governo He acted in that poft till King James II. conferred the government on Chriftopher, duke of Albemarle; and upon his death, the faid Hender, fucceeded in the government, by commiffion from the King, and favouring the revolution, was created a baronet by King William, and Queen Mary, in the first year of their reign, with remainder to Sir John Molefworth, of Pencarrow, Knt. his eldeft brother, and his heirs male. Sir Hender, had two wives, the firft, Mrs. Mangey, daughter of a goldfmith, in London, (widow of Thomas Tottle, a merchant, in Jamaica;) the fecond, was, (a) Mary, daughter of Thomas Temple, of Frankton, in Warwickshire, Efq; and widow of Sir Thomas. Lynch, Knt. his predeceffor, but by neither of them had any iffue. Whereupon, according to the limitation in the patent, his eldest brother.

Sir John Molesworth, of Pencarrow, Kat. fucceeded to the title; he was member of parliament for Boffincy, in Cornwall, 13 King William, and for Leftwithiel, 1 Queen Anne. He received the honour of knighthood from King Charles II. and by that King was conftituted vice-admiral of the north parts of Cornwall, and was continued therein by King James II. King William, Queen Mary, and Queen Anne. He married twice; (b) firft, Margery, eldeft daughter of Thomas Wife, of Sydenham, in com. Devon, Efq; fon of Sir Thomas Wife, knight of the Bath, temp. Jac. I. and fifter to Sir Edward Wife, of Sydenham, knight of the Bath, by whom he had iffue three fons; Sir John, Hender, and Spark; as alfo three daughters, Mary, Margery, and Prudence. Upon his lady's decease, he afterwards married Margaret, eldest daughter to Sir Nicholas Slaning, of Moriftow, in com. Devon, Knt. (who was a commander of great distinction and character, in our unhappy civil wars, and loft his life at the fiege of Bristol, in the fervice of his royal inafter, King Charles I.) but by her he had no iffue.

Sir John Molefworth, eldest fon and fucceffor to his father, married the daughter of John Arfcott, of Tetcott, in Devon, Efq; by whom he had iffue, three fons, and four daughters, viz. Sir John, his fucceffor in dignity and eftate; Hender, who died Feb. 6, 1732-3, unmarried; Spark, who died at Naples, 9 June, O. S. 1739; and, Prudence, Margaret, Mary, and Prudence; the three former died unmarried; but, Prudence, the younger, married Hugh Gregor, of Effex-street, London, Efq; and died of the finall pox, at Bath, 2 May, 1741, ætat. 23, leaving an only daughter, Jane. Efq; by whom he had, William Ramfden, of Lafcells-Hall, who married Mary, daughter of Thomas Waterton, of Walton, and had iffue, but they all died young; fo that his eftate came to be divided amongst his fifters and coheirs, viz. two fons, William; and John, who died unmarried his fecond wife was, Anne, daughter and heir of Lawrence Overton, of London, relict of George Chamberlaine, of London, and of alderman Poole, of London, by whom he had no iffue. This Sir John, died in Newark caftle, in the fervice of King Charles I. (he had a fifter, who married Sir Chriftopher Wandesford, Bart. great grandfather to the prefent lord Caftlecomer.) William, the eldest fon of Sir John, married the daughter of George Palmes, of Lindley, in com. Ebor. Efq; by whom he had iffue, three fons, John, Frecheville, and Peter; and five daughters; Brown, the eldest daughter, was firft married to Sir George Dalfton, of Heath, in com. Ebor. Bart. fecondly, to Edward Andrews, of Westminster, Efq; and after his death, to Sir Richard Fifher, of Iflington, in Middlefex, Bart. (fhe died March 15, 1739-40;) Margaret, the fecond daughter, married Sir John Dalton, of Heath, Bart. the third, Frances, married the marquis of Winchefter, (by whom he had, the prefent duke of Bolton ;) fourth, Mary, married Thomas Wilkinson, of Kirkbridge, in Yorkshire, Efq; and fifth, Elizabeth, married to John Anderson,Efq; Frecheville, and Peter, both died unmarried.

Sir John Ramfden, his only furviving fon, was created a baronet by King William; he married Sarah, only daughter and heir to Charles Butler, of Coates, in the county of Lincoln, Efq; by whom he had eight fons, who all died unmarried, except,

Sir William Ramsden, Bart. who married Elizabeth, the fecond daughter of John, late lord viscount Lonfdale, by whom he had fix fons, and five daughters; of which, Catherine, the eldeft, married Sir William Lowther, of Swillington, in com. Ebor.Bart. Sir William, dying June, 1736, was fucceeded in dignity and eftate, by his eldest son,

Sir John Ramfden, the present baronet, who represented the borough of Apulby, in Weftmoreland, in the laft parliament, and, for which corporation, he is at present a member; and is as yet unmarried.
