From the REV. F. A. WEST, Wesleyan Minister.

I have carefully examined your beautiful and complete edition of the Works of Bunyan, and am glad to see that at last some justice is done to the memory of "the first of allegorists," by a publication which will survive marble, in its transmission of truth to many future generations of immortal men. This edition, by Messrs. Blackie and Son, Glasgow, recovers several treatises wanting in other professedly complete editions; and has been edited by Mr. Offor with a care and correctness which only an enthusiastic admirer could be expected to bestow during nine years of diligent labour.

Full of vigorous fancy-simple, yet racy in his style earnest and devout in spirit-and thoroughly practical in his aim, Bunyan ought ever to be a favourite with Christians, and especially with ministers, even though they differ from him on some points. And this edition, including a beautiful Memoir, and an Introduction to every treatise, must command the attention of all lovers of the old divinity, and will bring several rare pieces into deserved esteem. I wish you more than a remunerative sale.

F. A. WEST.

From Rev. THOMAS GUTHRIE, D.D., Free St. John's, Edinburgh, Author of the "Gospel in Ezekiel," &c., &c. I have looked into the edition of the Works of the immortal Bunyan, now in process of publication by Messrs. Blackie and Son. It is an elegant and admirable edition, highly creditable to the enterprising Publishers; and presenting, in a form worthy of them, a series of works, experimental, doctrinal, practical, and allegorical, full of the highest genius, powerful talent, and glowing picty. To commend John Bunyan is unnecessary. He has written that which, taking its place next to the inspired Word, will keep its place to the end of time. Commanding, by their transcendent genius, the admiration even of the ungodly, his Works have ministered to the piety of every church, and made his name a household word in every quarter of the globe. Multitudes following "the footsteps of the flock," have been guided by his Pilgrim to the Celestial City; while his Jerusalem Sinner Saved has brought light and liberty to many prisons worse than that where, during years of captivity, he witnessed for the truth. The Publishers of this most valuable Work deserve every encouragement, and the Work itself is worthy of a place in every library.

THOMAS GUTHRIE, D.D.

From Rev. WILLIAM BROCK, Bloomsbury Chapel, London. The appearance of Bunyan's whole Works just now is most opportune. I confess to a large amount of sympathy with his views of Popery. Bunyan was one of the largest-minded men the Church has ever seen; and yet he could indignantly denounce the Man of Sin, and all his doings, as alike inimical to the temporal and spiritual wellbeing of man. A population imbued with the spirit, and acquainted with the subjects of Bunyan's Complete Works, would be more than a match for the emissaries of the Church of Rome. I shall be glad to find this really fine edition of the Messrs. Blackie in large circulation.

WILLIAM BROCK.

From Rev. JOHN M'FARLANE, LL.D., Erskine Church, Glasgow, Author of the "Mountains of the Bible," the "Night Lamp," &c.

To recommend the Works of John Bunyan to the reading religious public is a privilege and a duty-a privilege it is, for which we are deeply indebted to the Messrs. Blackie and Son, who are at present issuing the only beautiful and complete edition of Bunyan which has come under our notice; and, having such a privilege, it is a duty to do everything in our power to draw attention to the edition itself, and strongly recommend it to general support. I am satisfied that no other species of reading is more certain to counteract the jejune and mawkish sentiments of injudicious and unlearned pretenders on the one hand; and on the other, to offer a direct and irresistible opposition to the insidious speculations and unphilosophic amendments of our soi-disant modern theological reformers. The circulation and general perusal of such writings as Bunyan's must, in addition, prove a powerful auxiliary to the evangelical pastorate of this country, in its efforts to rear up, not a peasantry merely, but a community that shall be, not the pride, but the glory of the Church.

I have often regretted that the popularity of the Pilgrim's Progress should have, in a measure, ousted the other productions of its gifted author; and most sincerely do I congratulate the Christian people on the "red wine" and the "fat things" which are preparing for them by this enterprising firm. As to paper, printing, and embellishments, this edition is all that can be desired, and the price at which it is offered can only be remunerative if the sale be extensive.

JOHN M'FARLANE, LL.D.

From Rev. H. STOWELL BROWN, Baptist Minister, Myrtle Street Chapel, Liverpool.

I have much pleasure in adding my humble testimony to the excellence of this unparalleled edition of Bunyan's Works. I hope that the enterprising Publishers may meet the large encouragement which they so greatly deserve.

H. STOWELL BROWN

From the REV. C. H. SPURGEON, London. It is altogether needless that I or any one else should recommend the Works of the great Bunyan; I will, therefore, simply say a word for your edition. You have with singular wisdom selected the right man as editor, and he has with marvellous perseverance accomplished a great work in a masterly manner. You deserve an immense sale, and I hope you will obtain it. To all my friends and hearers I would say-buy the whole works of Bunyan, and pray for a blessing upon the reading thereof. The volumes are cheap and faultless; and the number system will enable the poor to buy them by little and little. Should you imagine that a longer testimonial would be more effective, you shall have it; for I love Bunyan, and shall feel it an honour to help the sale of his Works.

C. II. SPURGEON.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

LEEDS MERCURY.

This is so remarkable a publication, that we cannot forbear to notice it. Mr. Offor has spent years of his life, immense labour, and no small sum of money, in collecting the materials for by far the most complete, accurate, and abundantly illustrated edition of the Works of Bunyan ever published; and he has now given them to the world with the enthusiasm of an editor who enters fully into the spirit of his author. He has made the world his debtor. For, however unlearned was Bunyan, and heedless of the graces of composition, it is perhaps not too much to say, that a more valuable or more fascinating writer has not adorned our prose literature, or the practical divinity of Christendom.

[blocks in formation]

We need scarcely say, that we heartily welcome the edition of Bunyan's Works announced at the head of this article. It is one of the best republications of the day, and the manner in which it is brought out reflects great credit both on its Publishers and Editor. It is "got up" in handsome style, with numerous embellishments, and at a price which places it within the reach of most readers. The editorship, moreover, has been intrusted to a gentleman whose profound attachment to Bunyan, and unwearied diligence in the collection of previous editions of his Works, pre-eminently qualify him for the task. No doubt will be entertained on this point by any one acquainted with his edition of the Pilgrim's Progress.

Mr. Offor has prepared himself for his work with most exemplary diligence. His researches have been unwearied. Nothing has been neglected which could throw light on the history and opinions of Bunyan, or aid in restoring his text to its original purity. Labour which most would deem wearisome-the very drudgery of literature has been submitted to, in order that his hero might appear in proper style before the public. His painstaking has been well rewarded, and we thank him, honestly and warmly, for the service he has rendered. An introduction to each treatise is furnished, "giving an account of the time and circumstances under which it was originally published, with its design, and method of treating the subject." The table of contents is also furnished, with a brief analysis of the Works, and, at the close of the third volume, a general index will be supplied. It cannot fail to be the standard Edition, and is every way worthy to be so. Should it be the means, as we hope it will, of attracting more general and studious regard to the writings of Bunyan, it will confer a benefit on our age and nation not easily surpassed.

BRITISH BANNER.

Not many of our great Puritan ancestors, on the whole, fared so well as John Bunyan; and now he is being placed in a position which has not yet been attained by any of his great contemporaries. It was a happy hour that fixed on him the enlightened and vigorous mind of Mr. Offor who has brought to his task every qualification essential to the highest measure of success.

No expense or labour has been spared to raise, on a solid foundation, a lasting monument to the name of Bunyan, and to render it worthy of his memory. The Editor conceives that the period is happily chosen; and that the reappearance of Bunyan in such a style, at the present time, must be seasonable and beneficial to the cause of true religion and sound Protestantism. In this view we fully concur. Bunyan's book on Antichrist is a valuable production-a vigorous home-thrust at the heart of the great enemy of God and man. Indeed, all his treatises, even the least valuable, abound in precious ore. A vein of evangelical sentiment pervades everything that issued from his teeming pen.

BAPTIST REPORTER.

No one, we are persuaded, can read these productions of his pen without catching something of that holy fear of God, that love of the Saviour, that admiration of the gospel, and that burning zeal for the salvation of men, which shine forth brightly on every page; and the Christian public are under obligations to the respectable Publishers for this collection of all the known works of the brave Baptist dissenter-the prisoner, for so many years, in the old jail on Bedford bridge.

EVANGELICAL MAGAZINE.

A complete edition of Bunyan's Writings, in which nothing known to be his has been omitted, in which standard texts have only been used, and in which critical and historical notices are furnished of every separate work which fell from the pen of the great Enchanter, was quite a desideratum. And, of all men living, Mr. Offor was the best qualified for the performance of the important service. We cannot but express an earnest hope that this splendid and accurate edition of Bunyan's Works will realize an extensive circulation, equal to its great merits.

UNITED PRESBYTERIAN MAGAZINE.

But Bunyan's authorship was not limited to allegorical writing. One of the most distinguished and successful preachers that have ever laboured in the service of Christ, his eminently plain and practical discourses were, in frequent instances, sent to the press singly, or collected into a treatise; and his accumulated works, successively issued in this way, show him to have been a voluminous writer. They display the same marks of gigantic power that distinguish the works by which he is better known; and every page reminds the reader, by some glowing imagery, or some Titan stroke at the heart, that he is in contact with the author of the Pilgrim's Progress.

The Christian churches of Great Britain are now, for the first time, to be furnished with a complete and uniform Edition of Bunyan's Works; and the lovers of that "prince of dreamers" will see what will do their hearts good, when they look at the three goodly imperial volumes, in which their favourite comes forth as the in- | structor of their age. We hail the publication with real delight. A plan was projected, some years ago, for a

monument to Bunyan, to be erected in Bunhill Fields, London, where his ashes repose; and a highly appropriate design for the proposed structure was issued about the same time. We are not aware that the idea of a public monument has, as yet, been carried out; but the hand some and elaborate edition of his complete Works projected, and now nearly completed, by the private enterprise of Messrs. Blackie, is a monument, more expressive than any which brass or marble could supply, of the admiration in which their author is held by the reading public of Great Britain. The beauty of the typography, the high finish of the steel-plate embellishments, and the appropriately grave elegance of the binding, are all that could be desired for the editio princeps of Bunyan: while the rich profusion of editorial observations, in the form of prefaces to each separate treatise, and brief foot-notes appended, wherever the phraseology used, or the allusions made, seem to require explication, leaves little to be gleaned, in the field of pertinent annotation, by any one who may come after Mr. Offor as an editor of Bunyan's theological writings.
