PREFACE.

IN presenting for public consideration the following Treatise, I take the opportunity of remarking that it was written in accordance with the requirements and sectional divisions prescribed by the conditions on which Mr. W. H. Peek, M.P., offered Prizes for Essays on the "Maintenance of the Church of England as an Established Church." In elucidating the various departments of the important questions arising out of so comprehensive a subject, it has been my object to compile a carefully collated History of the Church from the Apostolic Age to the present time-a condensed narrative of the first Christian Councils for the settlement of The Faith-and the subsequent trials and triumphs which distinguished the struggles of British Patriots and Reformers for the vindication of Truth and Freedom, as consolidated by the Constitution in Church and State. The prevalent fallacies of the Liberation Society, and other objectors, with respect to the rights, property, and revenues of the Church, are explained and refuted; the proceedings of Parliament and Convocation affecting questions of Church Defence and Reform are noted and discussedmy statements and inferences being verified by references to the works of ancient and modern Authors, and to the speeches of eminent Statesmen and Ecclesiastics. To those writers and orators whose opinions have been consulted and reproduced, my obligations are expressed throughout the various passages in the Treatise, where

their expositions are quoted or recognised. It is hoped that the work will be found an authentic and interesting Manual of information on topics arising from the pending controversy between Churchmen and Nonconformists; and as a Hand-Book for the use of public Lecturers, it may be assumed that it constitutes a convenient compendium of facts and arguments. The Appendix contains many opinions, narratives, and suggestions, which may supply illustrations and thoughts for the help of those who engage in public discussions ; and the History of Convocation, now so prominent an ecclesiastical body in maturing matters for legislative consideration, seemed desirable as a retrospect of proceedings not known, or forgotten, by many classes of the community, and will no doubt excite much attention. Under the conviction that the Treatise thus anxiously prepared might prove useful and interesting, the President and Honorary Secretaries of the Devonshire Church Institution, who are familiar with my writings and lectures, recommended its publication, and opened a subscription for the purchase of the copy-right as an acknowledgment of the time, labour, and cost expended in the requisite researches and composition. A list of the Subscribers who have kindly promoted the proposal is appended, with grateful thanks for their friendly co-operation.
