In the course of this volume we have had to consider perils of a widely varied character; but we may be permitted to remind the reader, that there is one yet more imminent than any we have enumerated-one to which all are by nature exposed-the loss of the immortal soul. No calamity could be so awful as this, for it is final, fatal, and irretrievable. Taught, then, by the lessons of life's uncertainty which have been passing under review, may we hasten while it is yet time to the refuge set before us in the gospel; repent of sin; believe in the Saviour; and, renewed by his Holy Spirit, approve ourselves his faithful followers by a life of devout obedience. "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Be it ours to welcome these tidings with cordial faith, as worthy of all acceptation; and constrained by a sense of the mercies of God, no longer to live to ourselves, but to the glory of Him who hath "delivered us from so great a death.”
