The last two versicles are omitted at the Absolution after Lauds.

2. Absolutions after Mass.

Four other Prelates vest in sacristy in surplice, amice, stole, cope, and mitre. Each has two clerics, in surplice, to assist: one to serve as mitrebearer; the other to carry a candle. When ready, they go to the celebrating Bishop. — All then proceed to the bier in the following order: Two acolytes, one carrying censer and boat, the other carrying vessel with holy water and sprinkler; two acolytes with lighted candles; between them the Subdeacon of the Mass carrying the Cross; Clergy with lighted candles; the two junior Prelates; the two senior Prelates; Presbyter assistens and Deacon of the Mass; Bishop between the Deacons of honor; mitrebearer, bookbearer and candlebearer. The Subdeacon with the Cross stands at the head, i. e. between the Altar and the bier, facing the people; the celebrating Bishop sits at the foot end, i. e.

between the bier and the people, facing the Altar; the junior Prelate at the left of Crossbearer; the second at right of Crossbearer; the third at the left of Celebrant; the fourth at right of Celebrant. The four Prelates put on their mitres themselves, or take them off, if necessary.

Cel. reads (in tono lectionis) the Non intres, etc.

All sit cum m. Choir sings the Subvenite etc. The Deacon and the two acolytes with censer and holy water go to the right of the junior Prelate.

At the beginning of the Requiem aeternam the Deacon presents the boat to the junior Prelate, saying: Benedicite Reverendissime Pater. The Prelate puts in and blesses incense: Ab illo bene dicaris, making the sign of the Cross.

When Choir sings Kyrie eleison all rise sine m. Junior Prelate intones Pater noster, then goes around the bier, sprinkling the body, saluting the other Prelates as he passes them. Then he incenses the body in similar manner. Having returned to his place he sings the following:

V. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem.
R. Sed libera nos a malo.

V. A porta inferi.

R. Erue Domine animam ejus.

V. Requiescat in pace.

R. Amen.

V. Domine exaudi orationem meam.
R. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.

V. Dominus vobiscum.

R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Oremus. Deus, cui omnia vivunt, et cui non pereunt moriendo corpora nostra, sed mutantur in melius: te supplices deprecamur; ut suscipi jubeas animam famuli tui N. Episcopi per manus sanctorum Angelorum tuorum deducendam in sinum amici tui Abrahae patriarchae, resuscitandamque in novissimo judicii magni die, et quidquid vitiorum, diabolo fallente, contraxit, tu pius et misericors abluas indulgendo. Per Christum Dominum nostrum,

All sit cum m. - Choir sings: Qui Lazarum etc. Deacon and the two acolytes go to the second Prelate, who at the end of the Response gives the Absolution as above, but with the oration:

Oremus. Fac quaesumus Domine, hanc cum servo tuo N. Episcopo defuncto misericordiam, ut factorum suorum in poenis non recipiat vicem, qui tuam in votis tenuit voluntatem: ut sicut hic eum vera fides junxit fidelium turmis; ita illic eum

tua miseratio societ choris angelicis. Per Christum Dominum nostrum.

R. Amen.

All sit cum m. Choir sings: Domine quando veneris etc. - Third Prelate gives Absolution, as above, with oration:

Oremus. Inclina Domine aurem tuam ad preces nostras, quibus misericordiam tuam supplices deprecamur: ut animam famuli tui N. Episcopi, quam de hoc saeculo migrare jussisti, in pacis ac lucis regione constituas; et Sanctorum tuorum jubeas esse consortem. Per Christum Dominum nostrum.

R. Amen.

Choir sings: Ne recorderis

etc. At the end fourth Prelate gives Absolution, as above, with oration:

Oremus. Absolve quaesumus Domine, animam famuli tui N. Episcopi ab omni vinculo delictorum; ut in resurrectionis gloria inter Sanctos et Electos tuos resuscitatus respiret. Per Christum Dominum ' nostrum.

R. Amen.

All sit cum m. Choir sings: Libera etc.

Celebrant then gives the Absolution, as above, with oration:

Oremus. Absolve, quaesumus Domine, animam famuli tui N. Episcopi, ut defunctus saeculo tibi vivat, et quae per fragilitatem carnis humana conversatione commisit, tu venia misericordissimae pietatis absterge. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. R. Amen.

Cel. making sign of Cross over bier:
Requiem aeternam dona ei Domine.

R. Et lux aeterna luceat ei.

Chanters: Requiescat in pace.

R. Amen.

The burial takes place as in the Rituale Roma

num.

NOTE. If those giving the four Absolutions are not Prelates having the use of Pontificals, the Celebrant puts in and blesses the incense for each Absolution.
