Efficacy of Prayer.

11 Behold, we count them a happy which endure. Ye have heard of the pa tience c of Job, and have seen the end d of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

12 But above all things, my brethren, swear g not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath. but let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. 13 Is any among you afflicted? let ihim pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.

14 Is any sick m among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if p he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

16 Confess q your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of righteous man availeth much.

9 Not h rendering evil for evil, or rail. ing for railing; but contrariwise bless ing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 10 For k he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is 4 against them that do evil.

13 And p who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good

14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness sake, happy are ye: and t be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

15 But sanctify the Lord God in you hearts; and u be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and 7 fear.

16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evil doers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing than for evil doing.

18 For Christ y also hath once suffered for sins, the just a for the unjust, that he might bring us to God,being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; c

20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once f the long suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water.

21 The like figure whereunto, even baptism, I doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience m toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels o and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

CHAP. IV. FORASMUCH then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: q for he r that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

2 That she no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

3 For v the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lascivious ness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil x of you: 5 Who shall give account to him that t ready to judge the quick and the dead

20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private inter pretation.

CHAP. II.

BUT there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, n who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

2 And many shall follow their 5 pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgement v now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgement;

5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noahy the eighth person,a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

6 And turning the cities of b'Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making cthem an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;

7 And delivered just Lot, d vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked;

8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds:)

9 The Lord knoweth how to fdeliver the godly out of temptations, and to re serveg the unjust unto the day of judgement to be punished:

10 But chiefly themi that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government: presumptuous are they, self-willed; they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. 1

11 Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation 8 against them before the Lord.

12 But these, as natural brute n beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
