Cautions against Apostacy provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of our selves together, as the manner of some is but exhorting me another: and so much the more as dye see the day approaching. 26 For if ƒ we sin wilfully after that w have received the knowledge of the truth. there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins 27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgement, and fiery / indignation which shall devour the adversaries.

29 Of n how much sorer punishment suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctifien an unholy thing, and hath done despit unto the Spirit q of grace?

30 For we know him that hath said Vengeance s belongeth unto me, I will re compense, saith the Lord. And again, t The Lord shall judge his people.

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminatel ye endured a great fight of afflictions; 33 Partly, whilst ye were made a ga ing-stock, both by reproaches and affit tions; and partly, whilst y ecame companions of them that were so used. 34 For ye had compassion of me in 10 bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling your goods, knowing 3 in yourselves tut ye have in heaven wo a better and an unduring substance.

35 Cast not away therefore your con dence, which hath great z recompence c reward.

23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith, r Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called s the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works ta q He.11.17. man is justified, and not by faith only. 10 or, envy. 25 Likewise also was not Rahab v ther Ge.15.6. harlot w justified by works, when she s 2Ch.20.7. had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the 11 spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. CHAP. III.

MY brethren, be not many y masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 13

2 For a in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, c the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

3 Behold, we put bits fin the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

13 Who c is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation d his works with meekness of wisdom.

14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not; and lie not against the truth."

15 This e wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, 2 sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is 4 confusion and every evil work.

17 But the wisdom g that is from above is first pure, h then peaceable, i gentle, k and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18 And the fruit n of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. CHAP. IV.

ings among you? come they not hence, even of your 8 lusts that war p in your members?

2 Ye lust, and have not: ye 10 kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your 8 lusts.

4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship u of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world, is the enemy of God.

5 Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth 12 to envy?x

10 Humble g yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

13 Go to now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

14 Whereas, ye know not what shall be on the morrow: For what is your life? It 18 is even a vapour, p that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

17 Therefore q to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
