ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:

14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly. e

15 For g perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother k beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, I and in the Lord?

17 If thou count me therefore a partner, n receive him as myself

18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account; 19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh & my bowels in the Lord.

21 Having confidence t in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

22 But withal prepare me also a lodg ing: for I u trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you. 23 There salute thee Epaphras, y my fellow-prisoner in Christ Jesus. 24 Marcus, a Aristarchus, Lucas, my fellow-labourers. 25 The d grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, f Sit on my right hand, until make thine enemies thy footstool? 14 Are they not all ministering g spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs i of salvation? CHAP. II.

THEREFORE we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should 8 let them slip.

5 For unto the angels hath he not put ir subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

6 But one in a certain place testified saying, c What is man, that theu an mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?

7 Thou madest him 2a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But i now we see not yet all things put under him.

9 But we see Jesus, who k was made a little lower than the angels, 3 for the suf fering of death, crowned m with glory and honour; that he o by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

10 For it became p him, for q whom ars all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain t of their salvation u perfect through sufferings.

11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all w of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren;

12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.

13 And again, y I will put my trust in him. And again, z Behold I and the children which b God hath given me.

14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he c also him. self likewise took part of the same; that through death d he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15 And deliver them who through e fear of death were all their life-time subject to bondage.

16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked n and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed o into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold p fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched q with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without rsin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. CHAP. V.

FOR every high priest taken from
among men is ordained w for men in
things pertaining to God, that he may
offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
2 Who can 4 have compassion on the
ignorant, and on them that are out of the
way; for that he z himself also is com-
passed with infirmity.

3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so b also for himself, to offer for sins.

4 And c no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. e

5 So also Christ g glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, h Thou art my Son, to-day have I begotten thee.

6 As he saith also in another place, Thou k art a priest for ever after the or der of Melchisedec.

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers m and supplica tions, with strong crying and tears, unto him that was able n to save him from death, and was heard 5 in that he feared; for his piety 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he 6 of hearing. obedience o by the things which he sufor, because fered: they were not united by faith to. o Ph.2.8. p Ps.95.11. q c.2.10.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, 39-44. as well as unto them: but the word n Mat.26.53. preached 6 did not profit them, not being 5 mixed with faith in them that heard it. 3 For we which have believed do enter into rest; as he said, p As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, s And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. ver.6. 5 And in this place again, If they shall s Ge.2.2. enter into my rest. t c.3.19. 6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that 8 the gospel. some must enter therein, and they t to u 1Co.3.1-3. whom 8 it was first preached entered not 9 hath no in because of unbelief:

9 And q being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

10 Called of God an high priest r after the order of Melchisedec.

11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the ex-oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, u & not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk 9 is unskilful in the word of righteousness : for he is a babe.

7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, say-v Ps.95.7. ing in David, To-day, after so long a 10 That is, time; (as it is said) v To-day, if ye will Joshua. hear his voice, harden not your hearts. 11 or, perfect. 8 For if 10 Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. 14*

Melchisedec and Christ comp trist. [like unto the son of God, abideth: priest continually.

4 Now consider how great this m; a wo unto whom even the patriarch AL ahain gave the tenth of the spoils.

5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who e receive the office of th priesthood, have a commandment o take tithes of the people according to tlaw that is, of their brethren, thoug they come out of the loins of Abraham 6 But he, whose 2 descent is not unted from them, received k tithes of Ab tham, and blessed him that had I the pro miss. 7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.

8 And here men that die receive ithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom nit is witnessed that he liveth."

9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who re ceiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abr. ham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his fa ther, when Melchisedec met him.

11 If p therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, ard not be called after the order of Aaron?

12 For the priesthood being change, there is made of necessity a change ali of the law.

13 For he of whom these things are spc. ken pertaineth to another tribe, of whic no man gave attendance at the altar. 14 For it is evident s that our Tot ! sprang out of Juda; of which tribe sa spake nothing concerning priesthoo 15 And it is yet far more evident fet that after the similitude of Melchider there ariseth another priest,

16 Who is made, not after the law of carnal commandment, but after the er of an endless life.

17 For he testifieth, w Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. 18 For there is verily a disannulling the commandment going before, for th weakness x and unprofitableness thereof. 19 For the law z made nothing perfect, but 4 the bringing in of a better hope did, by the which a we draw nigh unto God. 20 And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest,

21 (For those priests were made with out 6 an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, e The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec :)

22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better g testament.

23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to con tinue by reason of death:

24 But this man, because he continuet), ever hath an unchangeable / priesthood 25 Wherefore he is able m also to save them 8 to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to nake intercession o for them..

26 For such an high priest hecame us, who is holy, p harmless, undefiled, se xa rate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first q for his own sins,and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself 28 For the law maketh men high priests

[graphic]

7 But into the second went the high priest alone a once every year, not with out blood, which he offered for b himself, and for the errors of the people:

8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, That the way d into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not f make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience g

10 Which stood only in meats i and drinks, and divers washings, k and car nal 3 ordinances, I imposed on them untii the time of reformation.

11ButChrist being come an high m priest of good o things to come,by a greater pand more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building, 12 Neither by the blood of goats r and calves, but by his own s blood, he entered in once into the holy place, t having obtained eternal redemption for us.

13For if the blood of bulls& of goats,&the ashes vofan heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh;

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who x through the eternal Spirit offered himself without 6 spot to God: purge z your conscience from dead works to serve a the living God?

15 And for this cause he is the Mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth..

18 Whereupon neither the first testament was 10 dedicated without blood.

19 For c when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and 11 scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,

20 Saying, This is the blood f of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. 21 Moreover g he sprinkled likewise with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shed ding of blood i is no remission.

23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these ; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear r in the presence of God for us:

25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

26 For then must he often have suffered ten net since the foundation of the world now once in the end of the world had 163
