figurative expression respecting Christ's reign on earth to be most reasonable. I trust it will be so; only to fancy that such things as ships of war, soldiers, controversy, contention, avarice, envy, hatred, pride, and every ill-feeling to be no more, to have the implements of war turned to the use of husbandry, and guns used for rejoicing days only. The chief worldly delight we enjoy now, is to be beloved by others; but, then, I do fancy that every set of men, whether in factory, warehouse, or ship, will look upon their employers as fathers, loving each other and doing all they can to please each other. Why, it might be so now among Christians, if they lived away from the world, as it were, among themselves.

C.-Pshaw! Christians have got as much sin in them as others, only they fight against it more, and grace enables them to keep it down. I tell you that such a state cannot be, unless Satan is off the earth, or men free from sin, they must all have one heart and one mind. Light and knowledge then will be most abundant, which I must say something about. We all know that the want of education, or knowledge, is the cause of sin abounding so much as it does now; therefore, on the same ground, the contrary experience ought to have the contrary effect. Now, this light, knowledge, and life, which will be so abundant, was figured forth by trees when Adam was in Paradise. You will find the prophets speak of the river and trees, so does John in his Revelations, plainly shewing, as John figuratively expresses it, there will be no need of the light of the sun or of the moon, or of candles then, for God will be their light. Christ is the tree of life, he is the life and light of men. Isaiah says, 60th chapter, 19th verse, "The sun shall be no more thy light by day: neither for brightness shall the moon give light to thee, but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light." Revelations, 21st chapter, 23rd verse, "The city had no need of the sun or moon. 22nd chapter, 5th verse, "There shall be no night there, and they need no candles, neither light of the sun." Shewing the spiritual light and life will be so great, that no other light will be necessary.

W. Then you think it but figurative?

C.-Certainly; because the same prophet Isaiah says, "The sun shall not go down or the moon withdraw itself;" besides, God said, "All things are yours," and it is not to be supposed he will take from them any part of his creation; besides, it is not correct to view part as figurative and part as literal, a natural light and a spiritural light are two widely different things-one is for the eye, the other for the mind. Then, again, it says, "There will be no death there;" which I think is also figurative, for Christ died and was buried but

did not see corruption. There is no doubt but all at that time will be as Christ was: he was the model-if I may so speak-the elder brother, and the saved will be like him. As for death, there is no death, strictly speaking, to a child of God; read the death, as it is called, of the patriarchs and good kings-they only sleep in Jesus; but it is of no consequence whether their bodies are changed and taken up to the church triumphant at once, as we read of Enoch, Elijah, and Jesus, or whether by what we call death they pass away; but I think, that if sin had not entered this world, men would have been taken to heaven as Enoch and Elijah; the millennium may be as the world would have been without sin. There is the BEAUTY also of this spiritual Jerusalem, represented as a building of a most splendid description; read 21st chapter Revelations. I admire the words, "I saw no temple therein, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it." It is all figurative language, and, therefore, to take all the books through the Bible, they are the same where the subject of the millennium is refered to.

W. How do you suppose this happy time will be brought about, and when?

C.-None can tell how long it will be before the time comes; I said it would be when all were converted, and it is being brought about now; for Christ came to teach, his apostles learned from him, went into all the world to preach the same that Christ taught them, so that the same teaching has been going on for nearly nineteen centuries, such will be the means to bring about this great event. The knowledge of the Lord is now covering the earth fast; I think the gospel is already preached in almost every land, this work will go on, until those who are for, will be more numerous than those who are against him, and for a few years before the time actually arrives, I have no doubt there will be great numbers converted at once. Isaiah says, 66th chapter, 8th verse, "Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day, or shall a nation be born at once?" then will be the time, thousands will flock to the standard, Christ being that Standard whom God has lifted up, then will the servants of God ride triumphantly over the earth in the gospel chariot; then will the conquered foe wonder with astonishment. In the book of the Revelations we read, "In one hour and she will be made desolate," showing it to be a short time. And, again, Romans, 9th chapter, 28th verse, "A short work will the Lord make upon the earth," there is no doubt they who are on the earth at the time, will witness a suddenness both in the conversion of some, and in the removal of those from the earth who will

not flock to the standard; and, as I said once before to you, I think the death of Ananias and Sapphira his wife, was a providence which somewhat figured a future period. The fact is, I believe, God intends to teach something of importance by all his providences. Then, again, a great deal is said by the prophets and in Revelations, about ship masters and sailors; I have an idea that all who sail in ships will behold, to their astonishment, at whatever land they call, that the things of God engage the mind of men more than the things belonging to the world. Revelations, 18th chapter, 17th verse, it says they will exclaim, "Alas! alas! that great city wherein men were made rich, and in one hour she is made desolate."

W.-I expect men's eyes will be opened to behold the truth, that they will readily and truly embrace it, it will not do then for any one to pretend they believe.

C.-Man never did and never will deceive God; Revelations, 21st chapter, 27th verse, "There shall in nowise enter into it (the new Jerusalem) anything that defileth or maketh a lie." For all shall know the Lord; there will be no occasion, as the prophet said, for any to say, "Know the Lord," then will those great commandments of God be fulfilled, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," and God with all thy heart, and mind, and soul, and strength. Then will all things be done to the glory of God, business, pleasure, amusements. The blessed Sabbath then will be a Sabbath indeed.

W.-Somehow I cannot bring my mind to see clearly into the mixing of religion with business and pleasure.

C.-In my opinion that is the very thing God will take delight in. It appears that is the beauty of the plan, that God has, as it were, determined that all he has made and given to man, even the business which God planned man should do shall be enjoyed and done on this earth in a manner that will please and glorify him. That will be the glorifying God in the body as well as with the spirit, for so God has purposed.

W.-I heard you say that you mix religion with your business and pleasures now.

C.-I am thankful that I am in some measure enabled to do so, so ought all Christians, and whether they eat or drink, or whatever they do, which has God's sanction, should be done to the glory of God; pleasure and business then are sweet enjoyments.

W.-It seems to me like serving God and Mammon. C.-It is impossible to serve both. If a Christian should by sudden temptations be led to transgress, it is not a proof that Satan is his master, and if after God has said,

P

"Be

diligent in business," and we are so, such obedience cannot be said to be a serving of Mammon, I say let those believe it who like; besides, Satan will not be on the earth to deceive at the time we are speaking of.

W.-What sort of pleasures do you suppose men will have

then?

[ocr errors]

C.-All that will add to the glory of God and his own perfect happiness, and no doubt many amusements which we now know nothing of, for at that time I believe, all things that God intended man should know will be understood, and mysteries of all kinds will be made plain, and everything designed for enjoyment will be brought to full perfection, man will be perfect. What pleasures? Is it not now a pleasure to see men who love the flowers of God's producing, bringing them forward to show. Methinks men and angels combined, sounding the sweetest music ever heard, ought to attend such an occasion, and say, behold! come and witness the works of God! Then, again, if ships and steam-boats are all perfection, if travelling is brought to perfection, what joy there will be in the journey and the dance, (no excess mind.) Fancy a steamboat excursion, music and men all perfect, flags fore and aft, with the Saviour's name thereon, others with grace, salvation, love, peace, joy, holiness to the Lord, &c., there will be no occasion to have them sprinkled with blood, because they will then know the full meaning of the term, "THE BLOOD THAT SPEAKETH." We may even suppose the king, queen and nobles, with the common people all harmoniously united, and the greater the men the more anxious will they be to glorify God, becoming nursing fathers and nursing mothers to the church of the EVER-LIVING ONE, then will they sing to the praise and glory of God, instead of the praise and glory of themselves, as they do now, then will heaven echo with the sound of perfect praise, and all the earth shall hear.

W.-But how can those on earth hear the sounds of heaven?

C.-God can cause them to be heard if he please, the church triumphant will rejoice with the church militant. Then will those on shore, who are beholding such a picture as I have described, seated together and enjoying the fruits and vintage of the earth, then, I say, will they rejoice together, and with rapture exclaim, " Behold the blessed of the Lord! In fact, it will be a joyous time. The prophetic testimony abounds with the exciting word Joy, "I will make them rejoice," no dullness, no sorrow will then be known, all will be love, peace and joy of a holy kind. Then will that beautiful type now used by printers to publish murders, &c., be used only and always for the proclamation of the praise and glory

of God, thanks be to his name, as it is used now in many places to make known his power and glory and majesty, by sending forth to all parts of the earth his blessed book, the Bible, wherein is recorded his will and pleasure. O, what a thought, a Paradise on earth! We look back at the first creation of man, we behold a garden formed by God himself, Adam and Eve were placed therein, filled with love and joy, at peace with God and all that he had made, and God pronouncing all that he had made "very good," when suddenly, through one man's disobedience, that Paradise was lost to us for ever. But we read that God is pleased to make known to us his will concerning a second Adain, who has obeyed fully, that we might obtain a better Paradise than that which we lost through the transgression of the first Adam; and because everything which has come to pass has been according to his promise, we have faith and hope in that which is to come.

W.-Do you suppose that the words in Scripture alluding to the marriage supper of the Lamb means the millennium?

C.-I have no doubt about it, for John's Revelations abound with praise to the Lamb, and in 19th chapter, 1st verse, he says, "After these things, I heard a great voice of much people in heaven," and at the 6th verse," I heard the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters," meaning people, "and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Allelujah: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice and give honour to him; for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready." 9th verse, "Blessed are they who are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb." In the same chapter the Lamb is called the Word of God, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

W. It says in the Revelations, "They shall behold his face," if so, he will personally reign.

C. So the anti-christian would have thought, they believed that he would dwell in worldly splendour as a temporal king. As they were deceived in the character of Christ and his kingdom let us not be deceived also, in reference to what his future reign is to be. Not that we shall live to see it on earth, if we are allowed to see it from heaven; according to the Revelations many will be raised from the dead to reign with Christ a thousand years, but I think that alludes to heaven, for they sat on thrones. I will now leave off for to-night, and tomorrow evening will, if it please God, say something more about it, and of the judgment day, so good night, and farewell so long.

W.

Be sure to come. Good night, God bless you.
