A. All Christians who are still alive and fighting against sin in the world.

Q. Do we pray for any others in this prayer? A. Yes, for all those who have died in the faith and fear of GOD.

Q. To what part of the Church do they belong?

A. To the Church Expectant or Waiting.
Q. Why do we pray for them?

A. Because their happiness is not yet complete,1 and we ask GOD to hasten the time when they shall enjoy all the blessings of Heaven with the Church Triumphant.

Q. What does all this third part of the service teach us?

A. As the second told us that our LORD JESUS CHRIST was our only SAVIOUR, so the third tells us that the way He saved us was by becoming our Sacrifice.

Q. What follows after the Oblation?

A. The fourth part of the Service, which is the preparation of the Communicants.

Q. How does this begin?

A. With an exhortation or short sermon on the proper way of receiving the Holy Commu

nion.

Q. What succeeds the Exhortation ?

A. The people are called on to make confession of their sins.

Q. How are they to do this?

A. By joining in the prayer which the Minister now begins to say.

Q. Why is this confession used?

A. To remind us how unworthy we are of GOD's goodness, and to ask His pardon for all our offences.

Q. What follows the Confession?

A. The Absolution, or pardon, pronounced by the Priest,

Q. How should we receive this?

A. Humbly kneeling, remembering that the pardon comes from GOD, though it is a man that speaks it.

Q. What does the Priest say next?
A. The Comfortable Words.

Q. What are they?

A. Four texts of Holy Scripture,1 telling us of CHRIST's great love and mercy.

Q. Why are they repeated at this time?

A. To excite in us a longing for the Presence of CHRIST, Who is soon to be on His Altar, and to encourage us to come to Him.

Q. What comes after the Comfortable Words? A. The Preface, or preparation for the Sacrifice. Q. How does it begin?

4. By the Priest saying, “Lift up your hearts.” Q. What should we do then?

A. We should answer "We lift them up unto the LORD," and should try to fancy how the Angels are praising Him in Heaven, that we may join with them here on earth.

Q. How are we told to do this?

A. By the words "Therefore with Angels and

S. Matt. xi. 28; S. John iii. 16; I Tim. i. 15; S. John ii. 1.

Archangels, and all the company of Heaven, we laud and magnify Thy glorious Name."

Q. What part of this hymn do the people say together with the Priest?

A. Only the end of it, from the words "Holy, Holy, Holy," which are those sung by the Angels.1

Q. What is done at the end of this hymn? A. The Priest kneels down before the Altar, and says the Prayer of Humble Access.

Q. What is this prayer?

A. It asks GOD to pardon our sins, and to grant that our Communion may be a blessing to our bodies and souls.

Q. What is the fifth part of the service?

A. The Canon, or Rule, which puts before us the Crucifixion of our LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Q. How does it begin?

A. With the prayer of Consecration.
Q. What does Consecration mean?
A. Making holy.

Q. What does the Priest do throughout this prayer?

A. He imitates the very acts, and repeats the very words, which our LORD Himself used on the night of the Last Supper.

Q. Why does he stand in front of the Altar? A. Because he is imitating our LORD JESUS CHRIST, Who stands, as our High Priest, before the throne of GOD the FATHER.

Q. What should we do when the Priest begins this prayer?

A. We should pray to God that He may accept the Sacrifice which the Priest and we, through him, are going to offer.

Q. What is this Sacrifice?

A. The true Body and Blood of our LORD JESUS CHRIST.1

Q. Is this a fresh offering of Him?

A. No, it is the continual presentation of His One Oblation of Himself once offered,2 and is part of that same offering.

Q. In what four ways should we offer this Sacrifice?

A. Firstly, as an act of worship of Almighty GOD our Heavenly King; secondly, as a thanksgiving for all His mercies; thirdly, as a sin-offering to obtain pardon for our offences; fourthly, as a prayer to Him to grant us, and all other Christians, blessings for our bodies and souls, and to drive away all evil from us.

Q. What great mystery takes place in the Act of Consecration?

A. When the Priest has broken the bread, and blessed the cup, and repeated the words of our LORD Himself, "This is My Body," and "This is My Blood," the Body and Blood of our LORD JESUS CHRIST are really and truly present on the Altar under the forms of Bread and Wine.

Q. What does the Priest do then?

A. He offers the Sacrifice to GOD the FATHER.

Q. Do the Bread and Wine cease to exist after Consecration?

A. No, the Elements outwardly continue Bread and Wine as they were before, but they have become what they were not before-the Body and Blood of CHRIST.

Q. What other mystery in Holy Scripture is

like this?

A. The Incarnation. JESUS CHRIST, though Perfect God, is at the same time Perfect Man.

Q. What should we do then?

A. Worship our LORD, Present in His Sacrament, as we should do if we could see Him bodily.

Q. What promise has He given to those who

act thus ?

A. "Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed."

Q. What does S. Paul say of those who do not act thus?

A. That they eat and drink their own damnation, not discerning the LORD'S Body.2

Q. What instance have we of worship being paid to our LORD under any other form than His human one?

A. S. John tells us that He is worshipped in Heaven under the form of a Lamb.3

Q. What is the sixth part of the service? A. The Communion, beginning with that of the Priest.
