18-21.

When Paul preached, &c. a certain woman named Lydia, heard: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul: and when she was baptized, &c.-Acts xvi. 13-15.

I say to every man, &c. not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith, &c. Let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith.-Rom. xii. 3. 6.

Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost, &c. I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient by word and deed.-Rom. xv.

13. 18.

But of him are ye in Christ Jesus. -1 Cor. i. 30.

My preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, &c. that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.-1 Cor. ii. 4, 5.

I have planted, &c. but God gave the increase, &c. God that giveth the increase.-1 Cor. iii. 6, 7.

We, having the same spirit of faith, &c. we also believe, and therefore speak.-2 Cor. iv. 13.

That ye may know, &c. what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead.-Eph. i. 18-20.

Ye are saved through faith: and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.-Eph. ii. 8.

That he would grant, &c. that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith.-Eph. iii. 16, 17.

Unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, &c. Phil. i. 29.

Through the faith of the operation of God, &c.-Col. ii. 12.

We pray, &c. that our God would, &c. fulfil the work of faith with power.-2 Thess. i. 11.

Looking unto Jesus the author (or beginner), and finisher of our faith.— Heb. xii. 2.

Every good gift, &c. cometh down from the Father of lights, &c. of his own will begat he us, with the word of truth.-James i. 17, 18.

To them that have obtained like precious faith with us.-2 Pet. i. 1.

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ, is born of God, &c. Whosoever is born of God, overcometh the world: and this is the victory which overcometh the world, even our faith.—1 John v. 1. 4.

SECT. IV. To make us fruitful, enable us to subdue Sin, and profit in Grace.

THEN rose up the chief of the fathers, &c. whose spirit God hath raised, to go up to build the house of the Lord, which is in Jerusalem.-Ezra i. 5.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, &c. he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season: his leaf also shall not wither, &c.—Ps. i. 1—3.

Thou wilt prepare their heart, and thou wilt cause thine ear to hear.Ps. x. 17.

Wait on the Lord, &c. and he shall strengthen thine heart.-Ps. xxvii. 14. I will go in the strength of the Lord God.-Ps. lxxi. 16.

Quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.-Ps. lxxx. 18.

Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee, &c. The Lord will give grace. Ps. lxxxiv. 5. 11.

The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree, he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age:

they shall be fat (or green), and flourishing. Ps. xcii. 12-14. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power.-Ps. cx. 3.

I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart, &c. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments, &c. Iucline my heart unto thy testimonies, -Ps. cxix. 32. 35, 36.

The preparations of the heart, and answer of the tongue, is from the Lord.-Prov. xvi. 1.

Man's goings are of the Lord.Prov. xx. 24.

Draw me, we will run after thee. -Cant. i. 4.

Awake, O north wind, and come thou south blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out, &c.-Cant. iv. 16.

See the effect of Christ's voice and importunity with his spouse.-Cant. v. Lord, &c. thou also hast wrought all our works in us (or for us), &c. by thee only will we make mention of thy name.-Isa. xxvi. 12, 13.

A vineyard of red wine: I the Lord will water it every moment.Isa. xxvii. 2, 3.

Your God will come, &c. and save you. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing. Isa. xxxv. 4. 6.

The everlasting God, the Lord, &c. He giveth power to the faint, and to them that have no might he increaseth strength, &c. but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength: they shall mount up with wings as eagles they shall run, and not be weary and they shall walk, and not be faint.-Isa. xl. 28-31.

I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, &c. I will pour out my Spirit, &c. and they shall spring up among the grass, as willows by the water courses.-Isa. xliv. 3, 4.

I am the Lord thy Redeemer, which teacheth thee to profit: which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.-Isa. xlviii. 17.

Blessed is the man that trusteth in

the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is: for he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and which spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not, see when heat cometh but her leaf shall be green, and shall not be careful in the year of drought (or restraint), neither shall cease from yielding fruit.-Jer. xvii. 7, 8.

I will be as the dew to Israel; he shall grow (or blossom) as a lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon, &c. I am like a green fir-tree, and from me is thy fruit found.-Hosea xiv. 5, 6. 8.

Who is a God like unto thee? &c. He will subdue your iniquities. Micah vii. 18, 19.

The Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel, &c. and the spirit of all the remnant of the people and they came and did work in the house of the Lord.-Hag. i. 14.

I will pour out upon the house of David, &c. the spirit of supplications. Zech. xii. 10.

But unto you that fear my name, shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.-Mal. iv. 2.

Jesus said unto her, If thou knewest, &c. who it is that said unto thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water, &c. The water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water, springing up into everlasting life.-John iv. 10. 14.

He that believeth on me (as the scripture hath said), out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

John vii. 38.

I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.-John x. 10.

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Abide in me, and I in you: as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine: no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me,

and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without (or severed from) me, ye can do nothing.-John xv. 1. 4, 5.

Sin shall not have dominion over you for ye are not under the law, but under grace.-Rom. vi. 14.

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us.Rom. xii. 6.

I have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase: so then, neither is be that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth, but God that giveth the increase, &c. we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.-1 Cor. iii. 5-7. 9.

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves, &c. but our sufficiency is of God.-2 Cor. iii. 5.

The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God, to the pulling down of strong holds casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God; and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.-2 Cor. x. 4, 5. xii. 9, 10.

I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me e; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God.-Gal. ii. 20.

For this cause I bow my knees to the Father, &c. that he would grant -you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith, &c. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. Eph. iii. 14. 16, 17. 20.

But, &c. may grow up into Him in all things who is the head, even Christ from whom the whole body, fitly joined together, &c. according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body, &c.-Eph. iv. 15, 16.

Brethren, be strong in the Lord,

and in the power of his might, &c, Put on the whole armour of God, that. &c.-Eph. vi. 10, &c.

I know how to be abased, &c. I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me. Phil. iv. 12, 13.

We, &c. do not cease to pray for you, &c. that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, &c. strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, &c. And he is the head of the body, the church, &c. for it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell.— Col. i. 9-11. 18, 19.

The head from which all the body, &c. having nourishment, &c. increaseth with the increase of God.-Col. ii. 19.

Ye received it as the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe: for ye, brethren, became followers of the churches, &c.— 1 Thess. ii. 13, 14.

Now our Lord Jesus Christ, &c. establish you in every good word and work.-2 Thess. ii. 16, 17.

Now the God of peace, &c. make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working (or doing) in you that which is well pleasing in his sight.-Heb. xiii. 20, 21.

God giveth more grace to the humble.-James iv. 6.

SECT. V. To give Power to persevere in Faith and Obedience, through Straits and Temptations, to eternal Life.

THE Lord thy God, he will go over before thee, &c. Be strong, and of a good courage fear not, nor be afraid of them for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.Deut. xxxi. 3. 6. 8. Heb. xiii. 5, 6.

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thy heart.-Ps. xxvii. 14.

The steps of a good man are ordered (or established) by the Lord,

&c. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.-Ps. xxxvii. 23, 24. 1 Sam. ii. 9. Ps. xvii. 5.

Renew a right (or constant) spirit within me, &c. uphold me with thy free spirit.-Ps. li. 10. 12.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee; he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.-Ps. lv. 22.

Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.-Ps. lxxiii. 24.

Those that be planted in the house of the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God: they shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat, &c.-Ps. xcii. 13, 14.

Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe; and I will, &c.-Ps. cxix. 117. The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all that be bowed down.-Ps. cxlv. 14.

Be not afraid, &c. for the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.-Prov. iii. 25, 26.

When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened, and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. Prov. iv. 12.

Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? &c.-Cant. viii. 5.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee. Isa. xxvi. 3.

A vineyard of red wine; I the Lord do keep it: I will water it every moment, I will keep it night and day. Isa. xxvii. 2, 3.

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.-Isa. xxx. 21.

And a man shall be as an hidingplace from the wind, and a covert from the tempest, &c.-Isa. xxxii. 2.

The everlasting God, &c. fainteth not, neither is weary, &c. He giveth

power to the faint, and to them that have no might he increaseth strength: even the youths shall faint, &c. but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew (or change) their strength; they shall mount up with wings, as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.-Isa. xl. 28–31.

I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not, &c. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.-Isa. xlii. 16.

Fear not, for I have redeemed thee, &c. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee, and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; for I am the Lord thy God. Isa. xliii. 1—3.

The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season, to him that is weary.-Isa. 1. 4.

Thus saith the high and lofty One, &c. I dwell in the high and holy place: with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the heart of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones : for I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wrath; for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.-Isa. lvii. 15, 16.

I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them to do them good: but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.— Jer. xxxii. 40.

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall rise: when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.-Micah vii. 8.

Ye shall be brought before governors, and before kings, for my sake, &c. take no thought how, or what you shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.-Matt. x. 18-20. Luke xxi. 15.

Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath

desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not.-Luke ххіі. 31, 32.

you, but such as is common (or moderate) to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will, with Whosoever drinketh of the water the temptation, also make a way to that I shall give him, shall never escape, that ye may be able to bear thirst but the water which I shall it.-1 Cor. x. 13. : give him, shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.-John iv. 14.

Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, &c. while I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name, &c. I pray, &c. that thou shouldest keep them from the evil one.-John xvii. 11, 12. 15.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or distress? &c. nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us: for I am persuaded, that neither death nor life, &c. shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom. viii. 35. 37-39.

Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? yea, he shall be holden up; for God is able to make him stand.-Rom. xiv. 4.

The God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. Now to him that is of power to establish you, according to my gospel, &c. To God, only wise, &c.-Rom. xvi. 20. 25. 27.

Jesus Christ, who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ; God is faithful, &c.— 1 Cor. i. 7-9.

There hath no temptation taken

Now he which establisheth us with

you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; who hath also sealed us, &c.-2 Cor. i. 21, 22.

I besought the Lord, &c. and he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness; most gladly therefore will I rather glory in mine infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me: for when I am weak, then am I strong.-2 Cor. xii. 8-10.

Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might: put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand, &c.-Eph. vi. 10, 11. 13. iii. 16.

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you, will perform (or finish) it, until the day of Jesus Christ.— Phil. i. 6.

Every where, and in all things, I am instructed, both to be full, and to be hungry, &c. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.-Phil. iv. 12, 13.

And I pray God, your whole spirit, and soul, and body, be preserved blameless, unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. -1 Thess. v. 23, 24.

Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, &c. establish you in every good word and work.-2 Thess. ii. 16, 17.

The Lord is faithful, who shall establish you, and keep you from evil. -2 Thess. iii. 3.

I know whom I have believed: and I am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.-2 Tim. i. 12.

No man stood with me, &c. notwithstanding the Lord stood with me,
