HUS saith the Lord God: Behold the days come when the plougher shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of the grapes him that soweth the seed: and the mountains shall drop sweetness, and all the hills shall be cultivated. And I will bring back my captive people of Israel and they shall build up the cities that were abandoned, and dwell in them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; and shall make gardens, and eat the fruit thereof. And I will plant them in their own land; and I will no more pluck them out of the land, which I gave them, saith the Almighty Lord.

II. LESSON. 2 Esdr. viii. 1. 10.

IN those days: All the people assembled together, as one man, in the street, which is before the watergate, and spoke to Esdras the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had given in command to Israel. And Esdras the Priest brought the law before the multitude of men and women, and before all who could understand it, on the first day of the seventh month. And he read in it distinctly in the street, which was before the water-gate, from morning till noon, in the presence of the men and women, and of all those, who could understand it. And the ears of the people were attentive to the book. And Esdras the scribe stood on a step

of wood, which he had made to speak on. And he opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people; and when he had opened it, all the people stood up. And Esdras blessed the Lord the great God; and all the people answered: Amen, Amen, with their hands lifted up. And then they bowed down, and adored God prostrate on the ground. And the Levites kept silence among the people, that they might hear the law; and the people stood in their place. And they read in the book of the law distinctly, and plainly to be understood; and they understood it, when it was read. Then said Nehemias, and Esdras the priest and scribe, and the Levites that interpreted the law, to all the people: This is a day holy to the Lord our God; mourn not, nor weep. He said also to them: Go eat fat meats, and drink sweet wine; and send some to them, who have not prepared any for themselves; for it is a holy day of the Lord, and be not sad; for the joy of the Lord is our strength.

GRAD. Ps. 32. Blessed is the nation, whose God is the Lord; the people, whom the Lord hath chosen for his inheritance. V. The heavens were formed by the word of the Lord, and by the breath of his mouth the whole host thereof.

GOSPEL. Mark ix. 16. 28.

At that time: One of the multitude speaking to, os,

said; Master, I have brought to thee my son, who hath a dumb spirit; and where-ever it seizeth him, it dasheth him, and he foameth, and he gnasheth his teeth, and he pineth away; and I spoke to thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not. Who speaking to them, said; O incredulous generation, how long shall I be with you? How shall I bear with you? Bring him to me. And they brought him. And when he saw him, immediately the spirit disordered him; and being dashed on the ground, he wallowed and foamed. And Jesus asked his father; How long hath this happened to him? And he said; From his infancy; and many times it hath cast him into the fire, and into the water, to destroy him. But if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. And Jesus saith to him; If thou canst believe, every thing is possible to him that believeth. And forthwith the father of the boy crying out, with tears, said I do believe, Lord, help thou my unbelief. And when Jesus saw the multitude come running together, the

threatened the unclean spirit, saying to it; Thou deaf and dumb spirit, I command thee, go thou out of him and enter no more into him. And crying out, and. greatly tearing him, it went out of him; and the boy became as one dead, insomuch that many said; He is dead. But Jesus taking him by the hand raised him up, and he arose. And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately; Why could not we cast him out? And he said to them; This kind of spirit can be drove out by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

LESSON. Osee. xiv. 2.

HUS saith the Lord God: return, O Israel, to the Lord thy God; for thou art fallen through thy own iniquity. Take with you words and return to the Lord, and say to him; take away all our iniquity, and receive he good, and we will pay thee the sacrifice of our lips

Assur shall not save us, we will not mount on horseback, neither will we say any more; The works of our hands are our Gods; for thou wilt have mercy on the fatherless, that relieth on thee. I will heal their bruises, and love them of my own accord, for my wrath is turned away from them. I will be as the dew, Israel shall bud as the lily, and his root shall shoot like that of Libanus. His branches shall spread, and his glory shall be as the olive, and his smell as that of Libanus. They that sit under his shade shall be brought back; they shall live upon wheat, and shall blossom as the vine; his memory shall be as the wine of Libanus. Ephraim shall say; What have I more to do with idols? I will hear him, and make him shoot up like the green fir-tree; of me is thy fruit found. Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? Prudent, and he shall know them? For the ways of the Lord are right, and the righteous will walk therein; but the transgressors shall fall therein.

GRAD. Ps. 89. Turn to us, O Lord, a while, and hear thy servants. V. Thou, O Lord, hast been our refuge from generation to generation.

GOSPEL. Lukevii. 36.

T that time: One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat

with him. And going into the Pharisee's house, he placed himself at table. And behold a woman, who was a sinner in the city, when she knew that Jesus was at table in the house of the Pharisee, brought an alabaster box of perfumes; and, standing behind at his feet, she began to wash his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed his feet, and anointed them with the perfumes. And the Pharisee, who had invited him, seeing it, spoke within himself, saying; This man, if he were a prophet, would certainly know who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that she is a sinner. And Jesus speaking, said to him; Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. And he said; Master, speak. A certain creditor had two debtors; the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And whereas they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which therefore of the two loveth him most? Simon answering him, said; I suppose that he, to whom he forgave the most. And he said to him ; Thou hast judged rightly. And turning to the woman, he said to Simon; Dost thou see this woman? I entered thy house; thou gavest no water to my feet; but she

hath washed my feet with tears, and hath wiped them with her hair. Thou gavest me not a kiss; but she, since she came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. With perfumes my head thou anointedst not; but she with perfumes hath anointed my feet. Wherefore I say to thee; Her many sins are forgiven her, because she hath loved much. But to whom less is forgiven, he loveth less. And he said to her; Thy sins are forgiven thee. And they, who were at table with him, began to say within themselves: Who is this that even forgiveth sins? And he said to the woman; Thy faith hath saved thee ; go in peace.
