God thro' Jesus Christ. Wherefore it is said in the scripture: Behold, I place in Sion a chief corner-stone, chosen and precious: and he that shall believe in him shall not be confounded. To you therefore that believe, there is honor: but to unbelievers, the stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the chief corner-stone ; and a stone of offence, and a rock of scandal to those, who stumble at the word, and believe not, whereunto also they were set. T that time: The first day of the week, Mary Magdalen came early, while it was yet dark, to the sepulchre; and saw the stone taken away from it. She ran therefore, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith to them: They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. Peter therefore went out, and that other disciple, and they came to the sepulchre. And they ran both together, and the other disciple out-ran Peter and came first to the sepulchre. And stooping down, he saw the linen cloaths lying, but went not in. Then came Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin that was about his head, not laid with the linen, but folded up in a place by itself. Then went in also that disciple, who came first to the sepulchre and he saw, and believed it: for as yet they understood not the scriptures, that he was to rise again from the dead. CREDO.

QUASIMODO OR LOW SUNDAY.
HIS is called by the former from the
Tfirst words of the Introit of the Mass; and formerly the greater part of the Sundays in the year took their names from their first words of the Introit. The English name, Low Sunday, seems to be given in contradistinction to the greater solemnity of Easter-Sunday. It is called, in the Roman Missal. Dominica in albis, from the preceding Saturday being called Sabbatum in albis ; because those who had been baptized on Easter Eve, on the following Saturday after Mass, laid aside the white garment, with which they had been clothed at their baptism and began this day to be no longer distinguished in their dress from the rest of the faithful. The Church, however, continues to instruct them in particular in the Mass of this day. It is to the new baptized, and even to those who have recovered the innocence of their baptism by the sacrament of pennance, that she addresses herself; representing to them, that like new born children, they ought earnestly to desire the spiritual milk of the word of God, which alone can maintain and increase in them the life of grace, which they have just recovered.

EPISTLE. 1 John v. 4. 9.
EARLY beloved: Whatever is born of God, overcometh the world: and this victory, by which the world is overcome, is our faith. *Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God. It is this same Jesus Christ, who came with water and blood: not with water only, but with water and blood. And it is the spirit that beareth testimony that Christ is the truth. For there are three that bear testimony in heaven; the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one. And there are three, that bear testimony on earth: the water, and blood; and these three are one. ceive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater: for God himself hath given this greater testimony concerning his Son: He that believeth in the Son of God, hath in himself the testimony of God.

T that time: The same day, it being the first day of the week, when it was late, and the doors were shut, where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews; Jesus came, and stood in the the midst, and said to them: Peace be with you. And having said this, e shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord. Then he said to them again, Peace be with you: as the Father sent me, so I send you. When he had said this; he breathed on them, and said to them: Receive you the Holy Ghost: whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained. But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them, when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore
said to him; we have seen the Lord. But he said to them: Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it. And, after eight days, his disciples were again assembled within doors, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst of them, and said: Peace be with you. Then he saith to Thomas: Put thy finger in here, and see my hands; and bring hither thy hand and put it into my side, and be not incredulous, but believe, Thomas answered and said to him: My Lord, and my God. Jesus said to him: Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed: but blessed are they, who have not seen, and yet have believed. Many other miracles also did Jesus perform in the sight of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written, that you may believe, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing, you may have life in his name. CREDO.
