ORDER OF THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD.

The Priest vested in surplice, black stole, and black cope, with clerks bearing Cross and Holy water meets the corpse either at the house of the deceased, or at the entrance to the Church, or at the Cemetery gates. Standing at its feet, he sprinkles it with Holy water, and then says the following:

In less solemn funerals the body is carried at once into the Church, or to the side of the grave.

Ant. Si iniquitates Ant. If thou, O observaveris, Domine, Lord, wilt mark iniDomine, quis sustine- quities, Lord, who bit? shall stand it?

Psalmus cxxix. De profundis clamavi ad te, Domine: Domine exaudi vocem

meam.

Fiant aures tuæ intendentes in vocem deprecationis meæ.

Si iniquitates observaveris, Domine: Domine, quis sustinebit?

Psalm cxxix. Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice.

Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities, Lord, who shall stand it?

For with thee there

Quia apud te propitiatio est et propter is merciful forgivelegem tuam sustinui ness: and by reason te, Domine. of thy law, I have waited for thee, O Lord.

Sustinuit anima mea My soul hath relied in verbo ejus: speravit on his word: my soul anima mea in Domino. hath hoped in the

Lord.

A custodia matutina usque ad noctem, speret Israel, in Do

mino.

Quia apud Dominum misericordia, et copiosa apud eum redemptio.

Et ipse redimet Israel, ex omnibus iniquitatibus ejus.

From the morning watch even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.

Because with the Lord there is mercy: and with him plentiful redemption.

And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Requiem æternam dona ei, Domine.

Eternal rest give unto him, O Lord.

Et lux perpetua luceat ei.

And let perpetual light shine upon him. Ant. Si iniquitates Ant. If thou, O observaveris, Domine, Lord, wilt mark inDomine, quis sustine- iquities, Lord, who bit. shall stand it.

The body is then borne into the Church: meanwhile the Priest intones or recites the following antiphon, and the choir or attendants chant or recite the Psalm.

In less solemn funerals this Psalm is often omitted.

To thee only have

For I know my iniquity: and my sin is always before me.

that thou mayest be justified in thy words, and mayest overcome when thou art judged.

Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall extol thy justice.
