bury, the Lady Chapel at Chester, &c. ; but the effect at Lichfield not being approved, it has been discontinued.

THE RE-OPENING,

On the 22nd October, 1861, was a day long to be remembered by the inhabitants, and by the 7000 who attended the Services on that occasion, among whom were about 600 Clergymen, who took the opportunity of presenting to their beloved Diocesan an affectionate and respectful address.

The Communicants numbered nearly 800, and the Offertory, including donations afterwards, amounted to more than £700.

The Services were conducted by the Rev. Sir F. Gore Ouseley, Bart., and the Rev. T. Helmore, Master of the Choir of Her Majesty's Chapel Royal, and were performed by 950 Members of Choirs from different Churches in the Diocese, and the regular staff of the Cathedral, with a dignity and precision which excited general admiration.

The Sermon was preached by the Lord Bishop of Oxford, from the 16th chapter of Deuteronomy, and 16th verse.

Sacred to the memory of the Right Honourable Lady Mary Wortley Montague, who happily introduced from Turkey, into this country, the salutary art of inoculating the small рох. Convinced of its efficacy, she first tried it with success on her own children, and then recommended the practice of it to her fellow-citizens. Thus, by her example and advice, we have softened the virulence, and escaped the danger of this malignant disease. To perpetuate the memory of such benevolence and to express her gratitude for the benefit she herself received from this alleviating art, this monument is erected by Henrietta Inge, relict of Theodore William Inge, Esq., and daughter of Sir John Wrottesley, Bart., in the year of our Lord, M.DCC.LXXXIX.

She died July 13, 1819, aged 56.
