ing himself down before f the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men. and women, and children: for the people wept very 1 sore.

2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against Jour God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land yet now there is m hope in Israel concerning this thing. 3 Now therefore let us make a o covenant with our God to 2 put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, ac cording to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble q at the commandment r of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

4 Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee; be of good courage and do it.

5 Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear w that they should do according to this word. And they sware.

6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehanan the son of Eliashib and when he came thither, he y did eat no bread, nor drink water; for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away.

7 And they made proclamation through. out Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves togetheruntoJerusalem, 8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

9 Then all the men of Judah and Ben jamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days: it was the ninth month, and the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling be cause e of this matter, and for the great 1 rain.

10 And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have 3 taken strange wives to increase the trespass of Israel.

11 Now therefore make confession unto f the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure; and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.

12 Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.

13 But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two; for we 5 are many that have transgressed in this thing.

14 Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God

them.

16 And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine a the matter.

17 And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.

18 And among the sons of the b priests there were found that had taken strange wives; namely, of the sons of Jeshua the) son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

3 And said unto the king, Let c the king live forever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, d the place of my father's sepulchres, e lieth waste. and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

4 Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I pray. jed f to the God of heaven.

5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.

6 And the king said anto me, (the queen 1 also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a k time.

7 Moreover, I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over, till I come into Judah;

And the king granted me, according r to the good hand of my God upon me.

9 Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. (Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.)

10 When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved u them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

11 So w I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

12 And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me, neither told I any man what my God y had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.

13 And I went out by night, by the gate a of the valley, even before the dragon-well, and to the dung-port, and view. ed the walls of Jerusalem, which were d broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.

14 Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, fand to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.

15 Then went I up in the night by the brook, h & viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.
