2 And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchi-shua, Saul's sons. p

3 And the battle q went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.

4 Then s said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised t come and thrust me through and abuse me. But his armour-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.

CHAP. III.

TOW there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David n waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Sau! waxed weaker and weaker.

2 And i unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his first-horn was Amnon, of Ahinoam k the Jezreelitess;

6 And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong r for the house of Saul.

7 And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, s'he daughter of Aiah: and Ish bosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father's concubine? 8 Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am Ita dog's head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to-daywith a fauit concerning thiswoman? 9 So w do God to Abner, and inore also, except as y the LORD hath sworn to Da vid, even so I do to him;

CHAP. IV.

AND when Saul's son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands n were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled. o

2 And Saul's son had two men that were captains of bands; the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beer oth p also was reckoned to Benjamin: 3 And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, q and were sojourners there until this day.) 4 And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a r son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, s and his nurse took him up, and fled and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was 7 Mephibosheth.

5 And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, who lay on a bed at noon: 6 And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under v the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.

7 For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber; and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night. 8 And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ish-bo34.6,7,17. sheth, the son of Saul thine enemy, which z sought thy life; and the LORD hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
