And, because I am old in sins, as well as in years: weighed down with iniquity, as well as with age; my gracious Lord, give me that godly sorrow for my sins, which shall work repentance not to be repented of. Thou hast saved many old sinners; O God, be so merciful to me a sinner. Put all my sins to the account of thy dear Son: and wash me thoroughly from them in the fountain of his precious blood. Especially, O merciful Lord, acquit and discharge me from the sins that lie heaviest upon me, and that make the thoughts of death and judgement most painful to me. O give me, Lord, some token for good, that I may have an evidence of my having found mercy at thy hands, and that I may depart in peace, and finish my course with joy, and, in the end of my life, be numbered among the redeemed and blessed of the Lord, through the tender mercies of my God, and through the all-sufficient merits of my only Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE CHILD'S PRAYER.

O MY God and Father, who has made me; have mercy upon me, and teach me to know thee: and incline my heart to love thee and enable me in all my life to do thy will, as I ought to do. Thou hast formed me for thyself; and in the church I have been devoted, and offered up unto thee, as thy child. O thou adorable Saviour, who hast ordered children to be brought unto thee, and hast declared, that of such is the kingdom of heaven, give me thy grace that I may understand and seek after God; yea, that I may seek thee early, and with my whole heart. Dispose me to remember thee my Creator

and Redeemer in the days of my youth, and to take upon me now thy light and easy yoke; that thou mayest not be unmindful of me in the time of age, or leave me comfortless in my latter days. As I grow in years and stature, so help me, Lord, to grow in wisdom and grace, and in favour with God and men. O keep me from the evil of this world; and carry me safely through it to thy heavenly kingdom. Make me obedient to my parents and teachers; and lowly and respectful unto all. And bless to me all the means that are used for my instruction: teach me to profit by them, and to acquire such learning, as shall qualify me to discharge with advantage the duties of any station which I shall hereafter be called to fill. O my heavenly Father! take care of me, and provide for me; and so dispose of me in the world, that I may be useful in my generation, and a blessing to the place where thy providence shall fix my abode. Preserve me, O my Lord, from the infection of bad examples: let me never be led away and enticed to follow the despisers of thy laws; but make me a lover and follower of such as are truly good, and a pattern to others of all that is lovely and of good report. O God, thou knowest my foolishness, and seest how weak I am; O look not upon my follies, nor be extreme to mark what is done amiss; but have pity on my infirmities, and forgive my sins. Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings thou hast ordained strength; O magnify thy power in my weakness, and make me a profitable member of society, and an instrument to promote thy glory. Leave me not, O Lord, to myself, or to my own foolish counsels; but let me be taught of God how to behave myself, and what to do. And take thou the gracious charge and govern

ment of me; and keep my heart ever in thy fear and love; and direct all my ways to please thee, my God, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

A PRAYER TO BE USED BY THE RICH AND GREAT.

O LORD, the gracious giver of all our good things! thou hast opened thy hand to me in a bountiful manner, and given me all things plenteously to enjoy : thou hast made me to be full and to abound, whilst multitudes around me are poor and indigent. O that this plenty, which I have for my body, may not prove a snare to my soul! Let me never trust in uncertain riches, nor rest in thy gifts forgetful of the Giver. Better were it that I had been altogether destitute of this world's good, than that I should make it my idol, or be satisfied with it as my only portion. It is indeed too often found, that the prosperity of fools destroys them. O merciful God, grant that this fatal consequence may not ever arise from the wealth bestowed on me! Let me never be suffered to abuse thy bounties, or to make them an occasion of sinning against thee. I am thy steward, O Lord; grant, I beseech thee, that I may be found faithful in what is committed to my trust; that I may honour thee with my substance, and improve my talents agreeably to thy mind and will. O that with the fulness put into my hands, leanness may not be sent into my soul! That I may not wax proud and wanton, and indifferent about a better world, when I am so well provided for in this! O let not my riches choke thy grace, or damp my zeal in thy service. But the more thou hast done for me, my God, make me the more careful to ap

prove myself to thee, more anxious to please thee, more fearful to offend thee. And, seeing that thou hast pronounced it so hard for the rich to enter into thy kingdom, O keep me continally vigilant to escape the temptations and dangers to which I am exposed.

Suffer me not, O my God, to trust in uncertain riches, or to value myself upon my worldly possessions; but make me to covet earnestly the true riches, even the treasures of thy heavenly grace and love. Enable me to count all things but loss and dung, that I may win Christ, and be rich in good works, and abound in the fruits of righteousness. As thou fillest me with thy good things, so fill my heart with thy love and grace, that I may use every gift aright to thy glory. O let me not despise any above whom thy distinguished kindness has raised me. But give me a heart to condescend to them of low estate; and amidst all my plenty, let me be clothed with humility. Make me forward to all the offices of charity; ready to communicate, willing to distribute; laying up in store a good foundation against the time to come, that I may lay hold on eternal life. Let it be my delight to make to myself friends with the unrighteous mammon, that when I fail, they may receive me into everlasting habitations. Whatsoever I have in the world, Ŏ that I may have it sanctified to me by the word of God, and prayer! and may be enabled, by a right use and conscientious improvement of it to honour thy name, from whom every good and perfect gift proceeds! Let me so use the world, as not to abuse it. Let me rather be deprived of all that I possess, than be retarded by it in my spiritual progress. Let me rather cast off the thick clay with which my feet are loaded, than not run my race with patience, and

so run as to obtain the treasures which are eternal in the heavens.

Amen.

A PRAYER TO BE USED BY SUCH AS ARE POOR AND LOW IN THE WORLD.

O LORD, the great disposer of all our estates and concerns! thy providence appoints to all their several stations; and it is thy will that there should be poor and low, as well as rich and high, in the world. One thing is needful; and it is not the wealth of this world, but the riches of thy grace, that will do us good, and make us happy. If thou shower not down plenty upon me, yet, Lord, give Ime what is needful and convenient for me. And, however thou dealest with me as to the things of this life, O deny me not thy saving grace, which is the portion of thy chosen, and better than thousands of gold and silver. Teach me, O my God, to suffer need, without repining at my lot, or coveting what I do not possess, or envying those who are in better circumstances than myself. O make me contented with my portion, and not grieved on account of my meanness and obscurity in the world, but desirous only to be known in heaven, and to be accepted of my God, in Christ Jesus. Let me never stretch out my hand to iniquity; nor seek to help myself,

by any dishonest ways; but choose rather to be poor

than wicked, and to want my daily bread, rather than be destitute of thy heavenly grace. Enable me to cast all my care upon thee, and to trust in thee for all needful provision. Let me labour, working with my hands the thing which is good, that I may have sufficient for my necessities: and may thy
