A Liturgical Prayer-Book
PUBLIC AND PRIVATE USE.
"I will praise the Lord while I live: I will sing to my God as long as I have any being."- Ps. 145.
R. WASHBOURNE, 18 PATERNOSTER ROW.
Card. Archiep. Westmonast.
Die 14 Martii, 1878.
THAT the forms of prayer and praise presented to us in the Missal and Breviary have ever been popular in Catholic countries, the numberless "Primers," "Hours," "Paroissiens," and similar Manuals sufficiently attest.
The adaptation of the Church Offices which is here presented to the public will enable those who, from whatever cause, cannot use them as they stand in the original, both to avail themselves of a kindred form of prayer, and to keep the Feasts and Seasons of the Ecclesiastical Year in a liturgical spirit.
In a work of this kind, in which simplicity and brevity are so essential, much has had to be sacrificed; and much has perhaps been done in a manner different from that which to many might commend itself as the best; still, it is hoped, that, allowance being made for the difficulties of the undertaking, the result will not be altogether unsatisfactory.
Special thanks are due to those who have kindly allowed their hymns to appear in this book: to the late Rev. E. Caswall, Mr. J. D. Chambers, Professor Seager (for his version of the Te Deum), Messrs. Novello and Ewer (for the versions of the Latin hymns, at pp. 4, 28, 33, 39, 44, 49, and 356), and others, who, if not specially named here, have not the less deserved the Compiler's sincere thanks.
For greater convenience, the Latin has been given in the case of all those Psalms, Hymns and other Prayers, occurring in the ordinary services of the Church, in which the faithful are accustomed to take more or less part.
