The Calendar. Abbreviations, &c. *Holidays of obligation. (The sign has been omitted before Sundays, which are always of obligation.) † Days of devotion. Mary; Ab., Abbot or Abbess; Ap., Apostle; Arch., Archangel: B., Bishop (when a Martyr, the office is as for Martyrs); C., Confessor (this C. has generally been omitted after the names of Confessors); D., Doctor of the Church; Ded., the anniversary of the dedication of a Church; Ev., Evangelist; F., Fast; H. W., Holy Woman; K., King.; M., Martyr; P., Pope (office as for Bishop); Pr., Priest; Q., Queen; Tr., anniversary of the translation of the Saints' relics to his shrine; V., Virgin; Vig., Vigil; W., Widow. The letters in the outside columns of the several months indicate the days of the week: the Sunday letter for any year from 1878 to 1900 being given in the Table on p. iv. E.g., the Sunday letter in 1881 is b; c will therefore stand for Monday, d for Tuesday, and so on. When a number is prefixed to the Saint's name, as on the 9th Jan., it indicates the day of the month on which the feast properly falls. The figures after a Saint's name show the year of death. Where no figures are given, a short notice of the Saint or Day will be found in Pt. IV. of The Ecclesiastical Year, p. 396. THE days of the year have been divided into three classes, shewn by the difference in type : 1. Principal Feasts; of which the more solemn are printed in Gothic characters, and the others in Roman capitals; 2. Minor feasts, in italics; amongst which have been included, the duplicia majora of the Church Calendar, and the feasts of Saints who are named in the Canon of the Mass or the Litany, of Founders of Orders, of the great Doctors of the Church, and some other days; 3. Ordinary days (feria) on which the Week-day service as given at p. 24 is said, with a commemoration only of the Saint's-day occurring: such Saints' days being printed in ordinary type. 1. MOVEABLE FEASTS, &c. The festivals and days printed below in Gothic characters are especially privileged, and displace all fixed feasts whatsoever; those printed in capitals, displace all fixed feasts other than those printed in Gothic characters.
