helping prayers of blessed N. we may deserve to taste of Thy sweetness in everlasting gladness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Commemorations for special occasions.

1. On week-days in Lent, and on fast-days.-V. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy great mercy.

R. And according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out mine iniquity.

Sanctify, we beseech Thee, O Lord, this (Lenten) fast: and grant that being purified thereby, we may through Thy mercy both obtain the forgiveness of our sins, and the grace steadfastly to avoid all that is evil. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

2. In times of public calamity (sickness, war, storms, &c.).—V. Hear us, O God of our salvation:

R. Hope of all the ends of the earth, and afar at sea.

Disregard not, we beseech Thee, O Almighty God, Thy people who cry to Thee in their affliction; but for the glory of Thy Name be appeased, and succour them in their tribulation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

3. For any sick or afflicted.-V. Behold the eyes of the Lord are upon them that fear Him:

R. Upon them that hope in His mercy.

V. Deliver them, O God of Israel:

R. From all their tribulations.

O God, the only support of human weakness, regard Thy servant N...... (servants N and N), for whom we implore Thy mercy; and grant that he (she, they) may be delivered from present evils, and in every affliction rejoice in Thy comfort. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

4. For any dying.-V. From everlasting death, O Lord: R. Through Thy Cross and Passion, deliver Thy servants. Almighty and merciful God, look down, we beseech Thee, upon Thy servant N......, and graciously confirm him (her) in Thy grace; and grant that in the hour of death he (she) may deserve to pass with Thine Angels into life everlasting. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

5. For one departed.-V. Eternal rest grant him (her), O Lord: R. And let perpetual light shine upon him (her).

Absolve, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the soul of Thy servant N...... from every bond of guilt; that in the glory of resurrection he (she) may live again among Thy saints and elect. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

After the Commemorations, or if there be none, after the collect of the day, one of the following anthems to Our Lady:

1. From Trinity Sunday to Wednesday in Holy Week. O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

V. Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei Genitrix. R. Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.

Hail! Queen, Mother of Mercy, our Life, our Sweetness, and our Hope. To thee we cry, exiled children of Eve; to thee we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, O gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and, after this our exile, show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O gracious, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, who, with the co-operation of the Holy Ghost, didst prepare the body and soul of the glorious virgin-mother Mary that she might deserve to become a worthy dwelling-place for Thy Son; grant that we, who rejoice in her commemoration, may, through her gracious intercession, be delivered from impending evils and from everlasting death. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

2. During Easter-time Regina Cœli as at page 6,

After the anthem to Our Lady, say one of the following:

1. The Te Deum, p. 77: on festivals, and on those Sundays which are not in Advent, or between Septuagesima and Palm Sunday.

2. The Litany of the Saints, p. 79: on Rogation days, Ember days, Vigils, and the feast of St. Mark. 3. The Miserere, p. 85: on Sundays in Advent, and from Septuagesima to Palm Sunday.

4. The De profundis, p. 87: on other days.

After which conclude as follows:

V. Look down upon Thy servants, O Lord, the work of Thy hands; and direct their children. R. And may the glory of the Lord our God be upon us; and the works of our hands direct Thou upon us. O direct the works of our hands. Glory be to the Father &c.

[ocr errors]

Let us pray.

LORD God, King of heaven and earth, vouchsafe this day to direct and sanctify, to rule and govern, our hearts and bodies, our thoughts, words, and deeds in Thy law and in the works of Thy commandments; that now and ever we may deserve to obtain salvation and freedom, by Thy help, O Saviour of the world, Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer:

R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
V. Let us bless the Lord:

R. Thanks to God.

May the divine assistance remain ever with us; and may the souls of the faithful through the mercy of God rest in peace.

Amen.
