CHAPTER XI.

AN ABSTRACT OF THE FAREWEL DISCOURSE OF JESUS TO HIS DISCIPLES.

LITTL

ITTLE children, yet a little while I am with you. A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye allo love one another. By this fhall all men know that ye are my difciples, if ye have love one to another. Let not your heart be troubled ye believe in God, believe alfo in me.

2....În my Father's houfe are many manfions; if it were not fo, I would have told you, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be alfo. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Whatfoever ye fhall afk in my name that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

3....If ye love me, keep my commandments; and I will pray the Father, and he fhall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it feeth him not, neither knoweth him: butye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and fhall be in you. I will not leave you comfortlefs; I will come to you.

4.... Yet a little while, and the world feeth me no more; but ye fee me because I live, ye fhall live alfo. At that day ye fhall know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is who loveth me: and he who loveth me fhall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifeft myself unto him.

5....If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my fayings; and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's who fent me. The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghoft, whom the Father will fend in my name, he fhall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have faid unto you.

6.... Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I faid unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me ye would rejoice, becaufe I faid, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

7....If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye fhall afk what ye will, and it fhall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit ; fo fhall ye be my difciples. As the Father hath loved me, fo have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye fhall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

8....Thefe things have I fpoken unto you, that my joy might be full. This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you.

Greater love

hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command. Henceforth I call you not fervants; for the fervant knoweth not what his lord doeth; but I have called you friends; for all things which I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

9.... Ye have not chofen me, but I have chofen you, and ordained you, that ye fhould go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit fhould remain. These things I command you, that ye love one another. If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

10....Remember the word that I faid unto you, fervant is not greater than his lord. If they have perfecuted me, they will alfo perfecute you: if they have kept my faying, they will keep yours alfo. But all these things will they do unto you for my name's fake, because they know not him that fent me. They fhali put you out of the fynagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whofoever killeth you will think that he doeth God fervice. And thefe things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father nor me. He that hater me, hateth my Father allo.

11....I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you: but if I depart I will fend him unto you. I have yet many things to fay unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit, when. He, the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he fhall not fpeak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that fhall he speak: and he will fhow you things to come.

For the days fhall come upon thee, that thine enemies fhall caft a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every fide, and fhall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they fhall not leave in thee one flone upon another; because thou knoweft not the time of thy vifitation.
