PREFACE.

A true Lutheran is he who in regard to every point of doctrine closely adheres to the clearly revealed Word of God cheerfully accepting, believing, and confessing what the Word of God teaches, and earnestly rejecting whatever is contrary to or has no good foundation in the Scriptures, in all things taking carnal reason captive under the obedience of faith.

A true Lutheran preacher is he who confesses with Luther: "In my heart this one article alone dominates and indeed shall dominate, namely, the faith in my dear Lord Christ who is the beginning, middle, and end of all my spiritual and divine thoughts which I may ever have, day and night.”

Among all the precious doctrines a minister of Christ is called to proclaim to the people unto their soul's salvation, the most precious is the doctrine of the justification of a sinner before God alone through faith in Christ Jesus without any merit or worthiness in us, or without the deeds of the law. Judged by the foregoing, this volume constituting the second part of Country Sermons" published in 1895 by the well known author, will be found to contain truly Lutheran, i. e. Scriptural, sermons; sermons that are from beginning to end thoroughly in harmony with the Scriptures; sermons that above all preach Christ and Him crucified, not in high sounding words but in chaste simple Bible language: sermons that leave no loophole for the selfrighteous haughty minded Pharisee to slip through; sermons that point out but one way and open but one door for entrance into heaven, Jesus Christ, the God-Man, the crucified and risen Lord, who is here proclaimed in demonstration of the Spirit and of power as the only but all-sufficient Savior of all sinners that will repent of their sins and believe in Him. At the same time those who have embraced Christ as their Saviour are here clearly taught and urgently admonished to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and to live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; to walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing being fruitful in every good work, and always to look for the blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.

May the good and gracicus Lord, who has already richly blessed these sermons when they were preached by the author to his beloved congregation, now also be pleased to accompany them on their way with His richest blessings. May He open for them many doors and many hearts and abundantly bless the reading of His Word as here presented in these " Country Sermons" unto the glory of His great name and unto the salvation of many souls.
