Whereof the man, that with me trod This planet, was a noble type Appearing ere the times were ripe, That friend of mine who lives in God,

That God, which ever lives and loves, One God, one law, one element,

And one far-off divine event, To which the whole creation moves.

One of the most pleasing characteristics of Longfellow's Works, is their intense humanity. A man's heart beats in every line. He loves, pities, and feels with, as well as for, his fellow "human mortals." He is a brother, speaking to men as brothers, and as brothers are they responding to his voice. GILFILLAN.

OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES.

The Complete Poetical Works.

A new and much Enlarged Edition, Revised by the Author. A fine portrait embellishes this Edition. Illustrated with wood cuts.

1 vol. 16mo. Price $1. Cloth gilt $1.50.

Dr. Holmes's Lyrics ring and sparkle like cataracts of silver, and his serious pieces-as successful in their way as those of the mirthful frolics of his muse for which he is best known arrest the attention by touches of the most genuine pathos and tenderness. GRISWOLD'S POETS OF AMERICA.

Pleasant as the face of an old friend, whose health and good looks are but improved by the lapse of time, is the sight of this comely volume. Two editions have preceded it, the last of which was published in London. The present is enriched with some dozen new pieces and is embellished with several graceful vignettes by Billings. One of the best proofs of the merits of Holmes's poems is, that they wear well. Our early admiration of them continues as fresh as ever. Although poetry has always been with him rather the pastime of the amateur than the serious pursuit of the author aiming at high things with exclusive devotion, yet no American poet has written better, though many have written more. He has merely trifled with the affections of the Muses, not wooed them like one who means something by his attentions; and yet they do not seem to have penetrated the gay deception, for to none have they been less chary of their favors. *

We take leave of this delightful volume, with a commendation to all lovers of good poetry to place it at once in their libraries. BOSTON TRANSCRIPT.

It would be useless to speak of the peculiar and striking excellences of Holmes's metrical pieces, in such a place as Boston, where his lyrics, comic and serious, are in every body's mouth or memory. Those who desire a handsome copy of his productions should obtain this elegant edition. - DAILY ADVERTISER.
