he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.

8. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

9. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him, and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

How may we know that we have passed from death to life?

14. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

What is the principal evidence the mind receives of its acceptance with God, or otherwise?

19. And hereby we know that we are of the. Truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. 20. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. 21. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

CHAPTER IV.

TO USE CAUTION AGAINST PRETENDERS TO THE TRUTH.-THE OBLIGATION TO BROTHERLY LOVE.

Recite the caution given by John against believing every pretender to the Spirit.

1. Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God.

3. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not of God: and this is that spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come, and even now already is it in the world.

Repeat the argument the apostle used to enforce the duty of brotherly love.

8. He that loveth not, knoweth not God: for God is Love.

9. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might livethrough Him.

10. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

11. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

CHAPTER V.

FAITH OVERCOMETH THE WORLD.-IN CHRIST IS LIFE. THE CONFIDENCE OF THE CHRISTIAN.

What is that principle that gives victory over the world?

4. Whatsoever is born of God, overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

5. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God ? Does not the true believer experience a reality in the Gospel; being made alive through Christ ?

10. He that believeth on the Son of God, hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God, hath made Him a liar, because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

11. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life; and this life is in his Son. 12. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God, hath not life.

Is it not the effect of the Gospel to preserve from evil, to inspire with holy confidence, to

enlighten the understanding, and to lead to the knowledge of the true God?

18. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

19. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

20. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true; and we are in Him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ, This is the true God, and eternal life.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF JOHN.

CONGRATULATES AN HONOURABLE MATRON ON THE PIETY OF HER CHILDREN.-EXHORTS TO PERSEVERE IN CHRISTIAN LOVE

AND OBEDIENCE.

To whom was the second Epistle of John addressed?

1. Unto the elect lady and her children.

Recite the apostle's salutation; and his expressions of joy on account of the piety of her children.

3. Grace be with you, mercy and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

4. I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in Truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

How does the apostle exhort the elect lady to continue steadfast in Christian love, and in obedience to God?

5. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments.

THE THIRD EPISTLE OF JOHN.

COMMENDETH GAIUS FOR HIS PIETY AND BENEVOLENCE.DIOTREPHES.-DEMETRIUS,

To whom did John write his third epistle ? 1. Unto the well-beloved Gaius, whom I love in the Truth.
