gives of what the Gospel requires of us, and effects in us.

5. This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, tbat God is Light, and in Him is no darkness at all.

6. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth.

7. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another; and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin,

CHAPTER II,

CARIST TAE BINNER'S ADVOCATE.THE LOVE OF

THE WORLD

MUST BE RENOUNCED.HOLY SPIRIT A GUIDE TO BELIEVERS.

If the Christian be overtaken with sin, what source is there of hope ?

1. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye

sin not. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous :

2. And He is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the vyhole world.

Are we not called to renounce the love of the world?

;

15. Loye' not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16. For all that is in the world, tlie lust of tije flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

What was the apostle John's testimony concerning the influence of the Holy Spirit.?

27. The anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you; and ye need not that any man teach

you, but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie; and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.

CHAPTER III.

GOD'S MERCY IN CALLING US TO BE SONS.--HOW WE MAY

JUDGE OF OUR STATE.

How does the apostle extol the mercy of God in calling us to be his sons ?

1. Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God : therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not.

If we commit sin, can we be the children of God?

7. Little children, let no man deceive you :

he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.

8. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

9. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin ; for his seed remaineth in him, and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

How may we know that we have passed from death to life?

14, We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

What is the principal evidence the mind receives of its acceptance with God, or otherwise ?

19. And hereby we know that we are of the. Truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.

20. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all tbings.

21. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

CHAPTER IV.

TO USE CAUTION AGAINST PRETENDERS TO THE TRUTR.---TBE

OBLIGATION TO BROTHERLY LOVE.

Recite the caution given by John against believing every pretender to the Spirit.

1. Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God.

3. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not of God: and this is that spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come, and even now already is it in the world.

Repeat the argument the apostle used to enforce the duty of brotherly love.

8. He that loveth not, knoweth not God : for God is Love.

9. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we night livethrough Him.

10. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

11. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

PAITI OVERCOMETA THE WORLD.--IN CHRIST IS LIFE. THE

GONFIDENCE OF THE CHRISTIAN.

What is that principle that gives victory over the world 2

4. Whatsoever is born of God, overcometh the world : and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

5. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God ?

Does not the true believer experience a reality in the Gospel; being made alive through Christ?

10. He that believeth on the Son of God, hath the witness in bimself: he that believeth not God, hath made Him a liar, because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

11. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life; and this life is in his Son.

12. He that hath the Son bath life ; and he that hath not the Son of God, hath not life.

Is it not the effect of the Gospel to preserve from evil, to inspire with holy confidence, to
