them, and bring upon themselves swift destruetion.

May not the righteous hope for deliverance out of temptation?

9. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations; and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. What warning does the apostle give, against turning again to the corruptions of the world?

20. If after they have escaped the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome; the latter end is worse with them than the beginning:

21. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness,, than after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

CHAPTER III.

DESIGN OF PETER'S EPISTLES.-END OF THE WORLD.

How does the apostle Peter describe the main design of his two epistles ?

1. This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

2. That ye may be mindful of the words

which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour.

Read the apostle's prediction and reflections concerning the end of the world.

10. The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat; the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

11. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be, in all holy conversation and godliness:

12. Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God; wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat.

13. Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

14. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot and blameless.

Recite his concluding admonition.

17. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing that ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.

FIRST EPISTLE GENERAL OF JOHN.

CHAPTER I.

JOHN'S WITNESS CONCERNING

CHRIST. THE FELLOWSHIP OP THE GOSPEL ONLY TO BE KNOWN BY WALKING IN THE LIGHT.

Recite the introduction to this general epistle, in which the writer, as an eye and ear witness of the Truth, invites others to embrace Gospel.

the

1. That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled of the word of life;

3. That which we have seen and heard, declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Recite that brief exposition which the apostle

gives of what the Gospel requires of us, and effects in us.

5. This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is Light, and in Him is no darkness at all.

6. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth.

7. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another; and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

CHAPTER II.

CHRIST THE SINNER'S ADVOCATE. THE LOVE OF THE WORLD MUST BE RENOUNCED.-HOLY SPIRIT A GUIDE TO BELIEVERS

If the Christian be overtaken with sin, what source is there of hope ?

1. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

2. And He is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. ~

Are we not called to renounce the love of the world ?

15. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

What was the apostle John's testimony concerning the influence of the Holy Spirit ?

27. The anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you; and ye need not that any man teach you, but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie; and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.

CHAPTER III.

GOD'S MERCY IN CALLING US TO BE SONS.-HOW WE MAY JUDGE OF OUR STATE.

How does the apostle extol the mercy of God in calling us to be his sons ?

1. Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not.

If we commit sin, can we be the children of God?

7. Little children, let no man deceive you :
