10. But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

CHAPTER III.

QUALIFICATIONS OF BISHOPS AND DEACONS. THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS.

What are the qualifications indispensable in a bishop?

2. A bishop must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach :

3. Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, nor covetous;

4. One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection, with all gravity;

5. (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

6. Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride, he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

7. Moreover, he must have a good report of them which are without.

What is requisite on the part of those who are appointed to the office of deacon ?

8. Likewise must the deacons be grave, not

double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

9. Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

10. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

How does it become the wives of these to demean themselves ?

11. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

What were those remarkable expressions of the apostle Paul, concerning the mystery of godliness?

16. Without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness; God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

INSTRUCTIONS TO TIMOTHY IN THE DISCHARGE OF HIS DUTIES.

How did the apostle Paul encourage Timothy to the work of the ministry?

6. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith,

and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

What instructions did he give him respecting his conduct, and the means of improving his gift?

12. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

13. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine;

14. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

15. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

16. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them; for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

CHAPTER V.

TREATMENT OF ELDERS.

With what respect should elders be treated? 1. Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father, and the younger men as brethren.

2. The elder women as mothers, the younger as sisters, with all purity.

17. Let the elders that rule well, be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

CHAPTER VI.

ON CONTENTMENT. THE LOVE OF MONEY.-DUTIES OF THE

RICH.

What is the Christian's maxim concerning gain ?

6. Godliness with contentment is great gain. 7. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8. And having food and raiment, let us be therewith content.

What was Paul's admonition to Timothy, respecting the pursuit of riches ?

9. They that will be rich, fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10. For the love of money is the root of all evil; which, while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11. But thou, O man of God! flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12. Fight the good fight of faith; lay hold on eternal life; whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

What was his counsel to the rich ?

17. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.

18. That they do good; that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

19. Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come; that they may lay hold on eternal life.
