TO THE AMERICAN EDITION.
THE Editor of this first American edition of the Rev. Mr. ORTON's Exposition of the Old Testament, has copied the second English edition of this valuable work. After expressing his gratitude to divine Providence, for enabling him, through many opposing difficulties and discour agements, to complete the edition, with so little delay; he offers his grateful acknowledgments to his numerous and respectable Subscribers, who have taken nearly the whole of his edition of fifteen hundred copies. He trusts they will be amply remunerated for their liberal patronage, by the religious instruction they will derive to themselves and their families, from the volumes they have received.
The following account of the manner in which this work was rescued from destruction, is related by its original Editor, the Rev. R. GENTLEMAN, and prefixed in an advertisement to the last volume.
