These beautiful lines of the poet Lucretius, I quote from the Treatise de Rerum Natura, and I do so in order that the dead Roman might speak, and say, in better language than any I could indite, how strong the motive that has induced me to this labor. Pray, then, receive this work of his head, his heart, and his hands, from your former Instructor, with kindness, and assist him to invoke for it the favorable consideration of all our brethren of the Medical Profession, who I hope will see in it the evidences of a sincere desire to promote the dignity and usefulness of our vocation. I pray you ever to look upon the medical profession, not as a business, but as a great Morality-not as a trade, but as a Mission appointed by God, for the benefit of the children of men.
